Carla Fletcher (Australian Artist)

Carla Louise Fletcher (born 26 October 1978) is an award-winning Australian Artist. She is a resident and has her own studio in Melbourne, Australia.[1]

Education[edit]

Fletcher studied Bachelor of Arts in Fashion and Design at RMIT however, halfway through her first year she left fashion design. She then took up Bachelor of Fine Art in Drawing in the same university and studied under Australian artists Godwin Bradbeer and Irene Barbaras. She finished art school and graduated with distinction.[2] While Carla was in college, she observed and sketched human anatomy during face lift and surgical operations under one of Australia’s famous plastic surgeons.

Career[edit]

Fletcher improved her skills as an artist when her father took her to Central Australia to create new work. They sketched, painted and walked through the Australian outback.[3] She had continuous solo exhibitions in Australia and has been represented in various local and national group shows. Her works are held within different private and corporate collections across Australia, Asia, Europe and the USA.[4]

Carla Fletcher’s fifth time as an Archibald Prize finalist. ‘This portrait of Del is connected to my 2015 and 2016 Archibald portraits of Australian fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson, both in the technical application of mixed media and in the magical, colourful and cosmic energy that they each bring to our world,’[5]Fletcher says.[6]

2018 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award ( BVRG) - John Butler[edit]

2016 Archibald Prize (AGNSW) – “Linda Jackson”, the other half of the “Twin Soul”[edit]

‘This painting of Australian fashion designer Linda Jackson is the twin-soul portrait of my 2015 Archibald Prize finalist portrait of Jenny Kee,’ says Carla Fletcher.[8]

2014 Archibald Prize (AGNSW) - Dan Sultan[edit]

Singer/songwriter Dan Sultan is a member of The Black Arm Band. ‘Dan has a commanding magnetism that propels his performance on stage. He is equal parts fragile and unhinged, beautiful and soul-driven, angry and passionate, the victim and the hero, in love with the land but battling the demons of the system.’ says Fletcher.[10]

2013 Sulman Prize (AGNSW) - Kevin[edit]

Kevin (Kev was rejected by his mother at birth and hand-reared by humans. As a result he has no idea about personal space and thinks he’s human, not a 17-hand Clydesdale horse. Initially, Kev was bred to be an official draft horse for Carlton United Brewery to pull the beer barrel dray, but once again he was rejected because of his colour.[11]

2010 Archibald Prize (AGNSW) – C.W. Stoneking[edit]

Carla Fletcher’s First Archibald Prize. A pencil, acrylic, pen and shellac on linen drawing of “C.W Stoneking” depicted by his iconic and distinctive all-white outfits and a coloured bow tie.[13] Shown for the first time in Melbourne since its yearlong Archibald Prize tour across New South Wales.
