Carlos Ruiz Bahamonde (1880 – 1940) was a Chilean politician who served as a minister.[1]
Biography
Ruiz was born in Concepción in 1880. He studied law and qualified as a lawyer on 4 June 1903. He practised law in Concepción and taught agricultural and industrial law at the University of Chile. He married Blanca Ruiz.[2]
A member of the Radical Party, Ruiz was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for La Laja, Nacimiento and Mulchén in 1915. During his first term, he served on the Public Assistance and Worship and Social Legislation committees. He was reelected for the same constituency in 1918 and served on the Legislation and Justice and Budget committees.[2]
Ruiz served as president of the Chamber of Deputies from 9 December 1920 to 15 May 1921. Reelected for the 1921–1924 term, he briefly served as provisional vice president of the Chamber before returning to the presidency, holding the position from 21 June 1921 to 2 June 1922. During this term, he served on committees dealing with elections, foreign affairs, internal administration and parliamentary drafting.[2]
Under President Arturo Alessandri, Ruiz served as Minister of Justice and Public Instruction from 12 January to 16 March 1923 and as Minister of the Interior from 14 June to 2 July 1923.[2]
In 1924, he was elected to represent Temuco, Imperial and Llaima for the 1924–1927 term. He chaired the Foreign Affairs and Worship Committee, but his parliamentary term ended when Congress was dissolved following the September 1924 coup.[2]
Ruiz died in Buenos Aires, probably in 1940.[2]
