Carlos Vega (born 1957) is an American lawyer and former candidate for District Attorney of Philadelphia.[1] Vega, a Democrat, and Puerto Rican American, formerly served as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia before his firing by Larry Krasner in 2018.[2] Vega was defeated by Krasner in the Democratic primary on May 18, 2021.
Early life and education[edit]
Vega was born in the Bronx, New York City in 1957.[3] As a young man, Vega worked in his mother's store and newsstand.[4] Vega attended Fordham University, graduating with a bachelor's degree. Vega attended Boston College Law School, graduating with a J.D. degree.
Career[edit]
After graduating from law school, Vega was recruited by Ed Rendell to join the District Attorney's office. Over the course of his career, Vega prosecuted over 400 cases in his 35 year career at the office.[5]
2021 Philadelphia District Attorney Election[edit]
Vega announced his candidacy on December 16, 2020. He is challenging incumbent Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Vega has widespread support from police unions such as the Fraternal Order of Police in Philadelphia. He supports a push for better policing. The Democratic primary was held on May 18, 2021. Vega was defeated by Krasner by a 2 to 1 margin.[6]
