Carly Saeedi
Carly Saeedi is an immigration lawyer and Greens candidate for the electorate of Fenner in the upcoming Australian federal election.[1]
Early Life
Carly Saeedi was born in Canberra. Both her parents are public servants.[2]
Personal Life
Carly is married with three children.[3]
Career
Carly completed a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law (honours) from the University of Canberra and a Masters of International Law from the ANU. [1]
She has worked as an Associate to Chief Justice Higgins of the ACT Supreme Court.[2] She worked as an immigration lawyer at Companion House, a community organisation in Canberra that works with people from refugee backgrounds who have survived torture and trauma. [4] She is a teacher at the ANU Migration law program. [5] She has published a number of articles on refugee and asylum seeker issues. [6] She continues to advocate for the rights of refugees. [7]
In October 2015 it was announced she had won preselection as the Greens candidate for Fenner in the 2016 federal election. [8] She was quick to publicly refute fitting in to the usual green stereotypes, noting “I wear a black suit and heels and drive a car to work. I have never chained myself to a tree or bulldozer, I don’t drink lattes, I have never smoked marijuana and I am not a vegetarian.” She also claimed she did not hold career ambitions as a politician but rather decided to run out of frustration at refugee laws.
