Carmel Swim Club, commonly referred to as Carmel or CSC, is a professional competitive and developmental swim club based in Carmel, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis. Founded in 1973, it is recognized as Indiana's premier swimming program and one of the top club teams in the United States.[1] It is a member of USA Swimming and operates under the local swimming committee of Indiana Swimming.
Led by CEO and Head Coach Chris Plumb since 2006, the organization has achieved widespread national prominence, acting as the primary development system for the highly successful Carmel High School swimming teams, which hold the national record for the most consecutive high school state championships across all sports (40 for girls and 25 for boys as of 2026).[4]
CSC has been recognized as a Gold Medal Club in the USA Swimming Club Excellence program 11 times since 2015. The club has also been designated as a "Podium Club," an honor awarded to swim clubs that achieve Gold Medal status for four consecutive years through the Club Excellence program.[5]
Beyond competitive swimming, the club operates the non-competitive Carmel Swim Academy, which opened a dedicated $5 million facility in 2023 to offer swim lessons, community programs, and adaptive swimming across Hamilton County.[6]
History
Founding and High School Dominance
Carmel Swim Club was established in 1973 with the mission of "teaching excellence through swimming, for life." Over the decades, it grew to become the definitive powerhouse of Indiana swimming. Much of the club's success is deeply intertwined with the Carmel High School swim program. The youth pipeline established by CSC has fueled a historic and unprecedented dynasty at the high school level. Under the guidance of coaches like Chris Plumb, who oversees both the club and the high school teams, Carmel has cultivated a culture of expectation and elite performance.[2]
Era of National Prominence
In the 21st century, Carmel Swim Club has produced athletes who have competed at national levels within USA Swimming. Since 2015, the club has been designated as a Gold Medal Club in the USA Swimming Club of Excellence 11 times.
The 2020s marked a breakthrough era for CSC athletes on the global stage. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, club alumni Jake Mitchell and Drew Kibler represented Team USA. The club's momentum continued to build toward the Paris 2024 Olympics, where an impressive 14 current and alumni CSC athletes qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials held in Indianapolis. Ultimately, Drew Kibler returned to the Olympic stage, alongside rising teenage stars and siblings Aaron Shackell and Alex Shackell.[7] Alex Shackell brought home a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m medley relay and a silver in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, making international headlines while still a student at Carmel High School.
Programs and Facilities
Competitive Pipeline
Carmel Swim Club operates a comprehensive training structure for approximately 500 competitive athletes, ranging from novice age-groupers to high-performance Olympic trial qualifiers.[8] The High Performance groups focus heavily on Junior National, National, and Olympic development, implementing rigorous training regimens designed to foster time management, self-discipline, and integrity.[1]
Carmel Swim Academy
In addition to its competitive squads, CSC serves over 1,500 individuals annually through its non-competitive arm, the Carmel Swim Academy (CSA). In July 2023, CSA officially cut the ribbon on a brand-new, 10,000-square-foot facility located at 830 City Center Drive in Carmel.[4]
The $5 million multi-use facility, developed to address the need for a dedicated, community-focused space, features a training pool with six 25-yard lanes, an attached shallow-water instructional area, and a mezzanine for parent viewing. This facility allows the club to host over 55 hours of adult programming per week, alongside infant-caregiver classes, adaptive swim lessons, and an expanded free swimming lesson program targeting children experiencing financial hardship.[6]
Finances
Carmel Swim Club operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.[9] Revenue is generated through membership dues, program fees for the Carmel Swim Academy, and community fundraising. The recent $5 million Carmel Swim Academy facility was made possible through $635,000 raised directly by CSC, supplemented by over $700,000 in contributions from more than 1,000 community supporters.[6] The organization's sustainable financial model ensures robust coaching staff retention and the ongoing availability of financial aid for community swimming lessons.
USA Swimming Club Excellence Program
Carmel Swim Club has been a dominant Gold Medal Club in USA Swimming's Club Excellence Program, which recognizes the nation's highest-performing clubs based on athlete performance. The club has been designated a Gold Medal Club 11 times since 2015. Additionally, the club has won the Junior National 18U Combined Team Championships multiple times, including consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023 for the Junior National Combined Long Course Team Championships. Currently, Carmel is the #2-ranked club in the country, as a Gold Medal Club in the 2025-2026 USA Swimming Club Excellence Results, with over 65,853 points. Carmel is also one of the only 12 swim clubs recognized as a Podium Club.[10][7][11]
Olympic Alumni
Carmel Swim Club has a history of athletes participating in the Olympic Games, with four club members having competed as Olympians. At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, three club athletes represented Team USA. In 2024, 14 athletes and alumni qualified for the US Olympic Team Trials; the club has also had athletes named to the USA Swimming National Junior Team 21 times and to the USA Swimming National Team 18 times.[12]
