Carmen Álvarez Lorenzo, born in Santiago de Compostela in 1970, is a pharmacist and academic specialized in the field of new polymeric systems for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

Carmen Álvarez Lorenzo has a degree and a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Santiago de Compostela. She spent a stay between 1998 and 2001 at the Department of Physics and the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later, she joined the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the Ramón y Cajal Program as a researcher. USC, where she has been a professor since 2007 and full professor since October 2020.

She carries out her research work in the I+DFarma group, being co-author of numerous articles in indexed journals, communications to congresses, two books and 17 patents. She is a member of European consortiums focused on the design of new drug delivery systems for ocular diseases and trap systems for tumor cells. She was recently nominated as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) association.

She actively participates in activities that contribute to science (FECYT Summer Camp) and for the elderly through the Fourth Cycle. In addition to coordinating the Interuniversity Master's degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

Carmen Álvarez Lorenzo is a full academician of the Galician Royal Academy of Pharmacy and has been honored with various awards, including the Ánxeles Alvariño González medal, from the Biology and Health Sciences section of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences.
