Carmen Fong is a colorectal surgeon and author. She is certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery and is the author of Constipation Nation: What to Know When You Can't Go, published in 2024.[1]
Career: Fong earned her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She completed a general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital/NYU Winthrop. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery. Fong has been affiliated with Wellstar Health System since 2023[2] and is co-medical director of Hemorrhoid Centers of America in Georgia.[3]
Writing: Fong wrote Constipation Nation: What to Know When You Can't Go, which was published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2024. The book covers constipation, bowel function, diet, hydration, exercise, and other aspects of digestive health. Publishers Weekly reviewed the book in October 2024 and described it as an informative guide to healthy bowel habits.[4] The Association of Women Surgeons published a separate review in September 2025, noting the book’s humor and clear writing.[5]
Selected publications: Fong has published research in surgery. In 2026, she was the lead author of “Ethical considerations of social media use for surgeons,” published in Surgical Endoscopy. The paper covers patient privacy, professional boundaries, misinformation, physician disclosure, and other ethical issues involving surgeons and social media.[6]
