Carol Wyer
Carol Wyer is a British author of comedies and crime fiction. Her first crime thriller, released in 2017 as an e-book, sold over 100,000 copies within the year. By 2019, total crime book sales had surpassed half a million[1] and to date, over one million copies have been sold.
Life
Wyer was born in Münster, Germany, but has spent most of the time in the UK and has lived in Staffordshire for over thirty years. A linguist and teacher, she was the managing director of Language 2000 Ltd from 1988-1997.
Writing career
Having written and self-published a series of illustrated educational books that taught French to young children, Wyer turned her attention to the adult market in 2010, with her first comedy novel, Mini Skirts and Laughter Lines. The book was self-published and became a best-seller on Amazon, earning her media attention and a feature in Woman’s Own.
A sequel followed and Wyer was taken up by a small publishing house who published four further books, including the People’s Book Prize Non-Fiction Winner 2015, Grumpy Old Menopause, which saw Wyer interviewed[2] on BBC Breakfast Television and numerous radio shows worldwide. She wrote articles for several national magazines for women, including Woman’s Weekly, and became a contributor [3]for the HuffPost.
A publishing contract with Bookouture, which has since been bought by Hachette Publishing, saw a change in direction and in 2017, Wyer wrote crime novel, Little Girl Lost, the first of the Robyn Carter detective series. This was followed, a year later, by the Natalie Ward detective series and in 2021, the first in another 5-book series[4], An Eye for an Eye, featuring DI Kate Young, published by Thomas & Mercer, an imprint of Amazon Publishing.
The Mail on Sunday raved about Wyer's blog[5] Grumpyoldmenopause.com. The British Comedy Guide interviewed Wyer[6] after her comedy book 'The Life Swap' was published. Crime Fiction Lover, a website for fans of crime and thriller based writing, featured Wyer[7] following 100,000 sales of her book Little Girl Lost. Carol was interviewed by Margaret James[8], of Writing Magazine, following the surge in interest in her crime fiction novels. The Bookseller.com featured Wyer when Bookouture announced Wyer would be writing four more books[9] for them, as well as a new police series[10] for them.
Wyer's comedy books were highly acclaimed, and were featured in the Daily Record[11]. The New Zealand Herald cited Wyer's Little Girl Lost audiobook as one of the top 10 on Audible[12]. Wyer was also featured on BBC Radio London, and BBC Radio Northampton[13], speaking about her latest novels[14].
The Extraordinary Business Book Club podcast featured Wyer[15] In 2014, Wyer won the Wishing Shelf Book Awards silver award[16] for Best Book For Adults (Non-Fiction). She also won an award for Readers' Favourite Book Award[17] for her comedy book Surfing in Stilettos.
Wyer's seventeen crime novels feature female detective leads. They are all set in rural Staffordshire where Wyer lives. Although the place names in the DI Natalie Ward series are fictitious, the settings and places are based on real towns in the county.
