Carole Anne Carr (born Betty Carless; March 26, 1928 – January 8, 1997) was a British singer & pianist, radio host and actress. She was the younger sister of Dorothy Carless, also a singer and actress in England and the U.S.
Early life
Carr was born Betty Anne Carless on March 26, 1928, in the Poplar district of East London. Carole took music lessons from the age of 7, and when 14, went to the Royal Academy of Music and dramatic art but left after 3 months to join Jack Payne's band. [1]
Career
Carole sang with several bands before joining the famous Geraldo & His Orchestra band in 1945 through 1948. In 1946 she had a radio program in the General Overseas Service called "Carole Singing" and appeared in many radio shows. After she left Geraldo & His Orchestra, she started as a solo artist and then entered into the realm of television, being the first singer to make an appearance on British television after World War II. In 1952 she appeared in the film Down Among the Z Men.[2] She later appeared in TV series such as Juke Box Jury and Melody Time.[3]
She was known for entertaining Britain's military forces during the 1950s.[3] In 1959, Carole was asked to record an album for Warner Brothers in Hollywood, "Imported Carr, American Gas" with arrangements by Warren Barker & Pete King. This was her only solo album.
Personal life
Carole was married to Peter Arthur Leuw from 1949 until her death in 1997.
Death
Carr died on January 8, 1997, in Devon, England, at the age of 68.
