Casey Calvert (born March 17, 1990) is an American pornographic actress and film director.[9][10] She has won several awards in the pornographic film industry.[11][7][8] She has written about the pornographic industry in mainstream media publications.[12][13][14] She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida with a degree in film production.[2][3][4]

She entered the adult media industry with early work as an art model and fetish model at age 21.[4][15] She chose her stage name after one of her college professors, Clay Calvert.[16][17] She began working in adult film in 2012.[18][4] She received an XRCO Award for her film work in 2015.[6] Rolling Stone called her, "one of the industry's top names."[19]

In 2015, Calvert began writing for publications including GameLink and The Huffington Post.[12][20][14] She was a contributor to the 2015 book, Coming Out Like a Porn Star: Essays on Pornography, Protection, and Privacy.[21]

Calvert expanded her film career, from acting to directing and producing.[9][22][23] She was actor, writer, and director on the Pure Taboo production, The Starlet: A Casey Calvert Story.[23] Calvert was chosen by Erika Lust to direct a feature series Primary.[10][23][24] By 2020, half of her time in her career was devoted to her work as a film director.[9]

Early life and education[edit]

Calvert was raised Conservative Jewish and attended synagogue every Saturday morning until her Bat Mitzvah, after which her family switched to a Reform synagogue and began attending only on the holidays.[25] In 2012, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida with a bachelor of science in film production and minors in zoology and anthropology.[2][3][4]

Modeling and acting[edit]

Calvert began working as a fetish and art model in the spring of her junior year of college, at the age of 21.[4][15] She chose her stage name in honor of professor Clay Calvert after taking his class on Mass Media Law as a sophomore.[16][26][17] She stated that "It felt right because really if I hadn't taken his class, I wouldn't be where I am right now," referring to how she learned during his class that pornography wasn't illegal as she had initially thought.[16] She also stated that the first name "Casey" was derived from the initials of her celebrity crush's children, K.C., but did not specify to whom she was referring.[4][27]

Prior to adult film, Calvert worked as a nude model.[28] Calvert was featured in The Mammoth Book of Erotic Photography.[29] She entered the adult film industry on 5 November 2012.[18][4] Her first scene was for the studio SexArt.[30] Mark Spiegler is her agent, but she also does custom shoots.[31] Calvert has described her career as: "Being a porn star is just like having any other job, except you're naked on the Internet".[32] Calvert was recognized with an XRCO Award in 2015 in the category of "Unsung Siren".[6] Writing for Bustle, Amanda Chatel observed, "Casey Calvert has made a name for herself as a new generation of porn actors. Unlike adult performers of the past, Calvert is an educated woman who didn't stumble into porn, but headed there because that's what she wanted."[17] Calvert worked with Bobbi Starr on BDSM film shoots, and was appreciative of Starr's respect for performers.[28] Calvert contributed to virtual reality pornography, where her likeness was digitally scanned and uploaded to an avatar.[33][34][35] Calvert took individual requests from clients for selectively made films as a way to make profit in the face of online piracy.[5][36][37] Her custom individual films were priced up to $10,000 per request.[38] Calvert saw this as a way to directly interact with her fans and create her own more creative content.[38][37] She found the billing process for individual custom videos to be difficult, due to restrictions from payment processors related to adult content.[37] Calvert has also tried to pursue a mainstream acting and modeling career, but potential employers have refused to hire her because of her work in porn.[39] She states that she has been recognized even while auditioning under her legal name.[39] Rolling Stone characterized Calvert as, "one of the industry's top names."[19]

Writing and directing[edit]

In September 2015, Calvert was hired to write a monthly BDSM- and fetish-themed column for GameLink's The Naked Truth blog, and to answer reader questions on their website.[12] Calvert contributed to GameLink in 2016 as an expert on topics related to fetish and BDSM.[40][41][20] She has also written about pornography for The Huffington Post.[13][14] She contributed an essay to the compilation book, Coming Out Like a Porn Star: Essays on Pornography, Protection, and Privacy.[21]

Calvert diversified her career from acting to directing as well.[9][22][23] In 2019, Calvert worked with distributor Adult Time on a Pure Taboo production as actor, writer, and casting director, titled, The Starlet: A Casey Calvert Story.[23] Calvert was chosen by Erika Lust to direct a feature series for LustCinema called Primary, shot in Barcelona, Spain.[10][23][24] Calvert wrote the script as well.[42][43] Calvert's story is about four people living in Los Angeles and dealing with open relationships.[43] Calvert shot Primary as a six-episode series.[43] She wrote a script of about 20-30 pages for each episode of the series.[43] She was inspired by the Netflix series, Easy.[43] Calvert was part of LustCinema's foray into production work in the United States.[43] Calvert also led the casting process, taking her potential cast members through auditons.[43] She directed actors including Penny Pax and Derrick Pierce.[24][42] For this production, Calvert decided to include women as filmmakers in her crew from mainstream cinema that had previously never worked on a pornographic film set.[23] Calvert filmed Primary over an 11-day production schedule.[43] Calvert found the most difficult part of the film production process was selecting filming locations for location shooting.[43] Calvert appreciated the increased freedom of expression she could pursue in her transition from actress to film director.[24] Journalist Mackenzie Cummings-Grady wrote of her film directorial work, "The story is rich in details, and the cinematography, courtesy of breakout director Casey Calvert, is lush and captivating. It's some of the most opulent pornography ever created."[44] Calvert consulted with Jordyn Woods and advised her on how to support sex workers.[45] By 2020 half of her time was spent as a film director.[9]

Personal life[edit]

Calvert identifies as a feminist.[25][46][28] Calvert explained her views on feminism to author Rich Moreland in the book, Pornography Feminism: As Powerful as She Wants to Be, "Feminism is all about the right to choice."[28] She is married to industry director Eli Cross.[5] They have been together since 2013; he also acts as her cinematographer.[15] Her family is supportive of her career.[28] Calvert maintains a good relationship with her mother and father; her younger brother helped her with photography editing in her early modeling career.[28] Prior to the start of her career in adult film, Calvert moved from Florida to Los Angeles, where she works and resides.[47]
