Casey Scharf is an American documentary television producer best known as the creator and writer of the Peacock (streaming service) travel series Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss.[1]

Career

Scharf has served as a producer on a variety of documentary television series, including Viceland's Emmy-nominated Vice World of Sports and Starz's Warriors of Liberty City, executive produced by LeBron James and SpringHill Entertainment.[2]

In Spring 2019, Scharf secured the rights to Eric Weiner's New York Times Best-Selling book, The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World.[3] After attaching comedian Rainn Wilson as host,[4] Scharf partnered with RadicalMedia to produce the five-part travel documentary series Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss for NBC's Peacock streaming platform, and later for MSNBC.[5] The series was nominated for a Critics' Choice Television Award in 2023,[6] and won the Directors Guild of America Award in February 2024.[7]

Personal Life

Scharf resides in Los Angeles, California. He became an advocate for mitochondrial disease research after his niece, Evan, passed away from the disorder in 2022 at the age of three. Her face is seen at the end of episodes of Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss as part of the banner for his production company, Panama Hat Productions.[8]
