Catalin Barboianu

Catalin Barboianu (born in 1968) is a Romanian mathematician and philosopher of science. He earned his PhD in philosophy of science from the University of Bucharest. He is researcher in the following areas: applied mathematics, cognitive psychology (problem gambling), philosophy of education, education sciences (science and mathematics education), philosophy of science and mathematics, epistemology, philosophy of language. He is also a science writer and founder of PhilScience organization.

Between 2004 and 2013 he authored eight books on mathematics of gambling. As a gaming mathematician and problem-gambling researcher he militated for the exposure of the mathematical facts of gambling to players, as an ethical obligation and for the effectiveness of the prevention and treatment of problematic gambling. He is consultant for the mathematical aspects of games of chance for the gaming industry and problem-gambling institutions.

In mathematics education, Barboianu argued for the necessity of turning to philosophy of mathematics and of science, fundamentals of mathematics, and epistemology, for an adequate understanding of mathematics.
