Qualification tournaments exist where the number of competitors wishing to participate in an event at the Olympic Games is larger than the number of places available. Olympics trials are for a single country. International selection tournaments exist mainly for team sports, but also e.g. in Olympic boxing. Alternatives to qualification tournaments include:

• using world rankings
• setting a minimum qualification standard (in measured events such as track and field or weightlifting)
