Catherine Burns is a[an American] director, producer, and radio host.
Burns is the long-time Artistic Director of storytelling organization The Moth. With Jay Allison, she is the producer of the Peabody Award-winning The Moth Radio Hour, which she also hosts and curates. She is also the editor of The Moth’s anthologies: The Moth: 50 True Stories (New York Times bestseller), All These Wonders, which Michiko Kakutani from the New York Times called “Wonderful,” [citation]and Occasional Magic (New York Times bestseller). She is the author of How to Tell a Story: The Essential Guide to Memorable Storytelling from The Moth, along with Meg Bowles, Jenifer Hixson, Sarah Austin Jenness, and Kate Tellers.
In addition to her work at The Moth, Burns was the director of solo shows The Gates, written and performed by Adam Gopnik, and Helen & Edgar, written and performed by Edgar Oliver, which was called "utterly absorbing and unexpectedly moving" by Ben Brantley of The New York Times.
Prior to The Moth, Burns worked as a director and producer of television and independent films, interviewing Ozzy Osbourne, Martha Stewart, Howard Stern, and more. She began working with The Moth as a volunteer for its Community Program.
Originally from Alabama, Burns now lives in Brooklyn, NY.
