Catherine (Cait) M. DesRoches is an American health services researcher focused on health information transparency, electronic health records (EHR), and the integration of health information technology into clinical care. She has been the executive director of OpenNotes,[1] a research initiative at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, since 2016.[2] She is also an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.[3]
Career
DesRoches received her Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from Columbia University, and a Master of Science from University of Massachusetts.[1]
In 2005, she led federal efforts to define functional electronic health record (EHR) systems and develop national adoption metrics.[4] This work resulted in a publication in The New England Journal of Medicine that established baseline data for EHR use in the United States, and supported the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' "Meaningful Use" program.[5] This work led to DesRoches' interest in health transparency focused research, such as a 2010 JAMA study focused on why doctors do not report on their impaired colleagues.[6][7]
OpenNotes
In 2016, DesRoches became Executive Director of OpenNotes, an academic lab that studies the impact of transparent communication between clinicians and patients.[8] She helped OpenNotes expand from the research demonstration phase of 20,000 patients to a nationwide initiative. This research contributed to the inclusion of "open notes requirements" in the 21st Century Cures Act, which mandated that U.S. patients have immediate access to their clinical notes starting in 2021.[9] In 2022, DesRoches announced OpenNotes' willingness to partner with the developers of health information technology in addition to academic partners.[10]
Coalition for Care Partners
DesRoches co-founded and co-leads the Coalition for Care Partners[11] in partnership with Jennifer L. Wolff, PhD (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health).[12] The Coalition for Care Partners is a partnership among patients, care partners, clinicians, care delivery systems, health information technology vendors, and researchers.[13] The group's research focuses primarily on caregiver (care partner) use of online patient portals, and publishes its work in peer reviewed journals .[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]
Academic & Mentorship Roles
At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, DesRoches mentors junior and mid-career physician-researchers as the co-director of Faculty Scholarship in the Division of General Medicine.
