Mattes resides in the small town of Sprucewoods, Manitoba, Canada.[1]Mattes’ work addresses issues of Métis and Aboriginal identity in relationship to both the history and practice of art.[1]

Education

Mattes started her education at the University of Winnipeg. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1996[2]. She then pursued a graduate degree at Concordia University in Montreal. Mattes graduated from Concordia University in 1998 with a master’s degree in Art History[2]. She is currently working towards her PhD in Native Studies from the University of Manitoba.

Career

Since 1997 Mattes has worked as a curator and writer. Mattes has curated exhibitions at a variety of galleries across Canada including Winnipeg Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Dunlop Art Gallery, and the Kelowna Art Gallery. Mattes has also curated in galleries internationally including the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Sydney, Australia. Beyond her work as a freelance curator, Mattes has served as the curator of the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba[3] and as a board member of the Urban Shaman Gallery.[4]Mattes also works as an Assistant Professor at Brandon University teaching Art History.[3] During her career, Mattes has contributed a significant amount of academic and critical art writing to a variety of art institutions, some of which include Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, The Winnipeg Art Gallery, National Museum of the American Indian, and Gallery 101.[3] Due to her success as a curator and writer, in 2010 Mattes was chosen to be a delegate on the Canada Council Aboriginal Curators Delegation to New Zealand and Australia.[3]

Throughout her career Mattes has produced and co-produced a variety of exhibitions. Some of her earliest exhibitions include, Tattoonation, Co-Curator, Nation2Nation, (1997), and Welcome to Our History, Curator, Concordia University, Montreal (1997).[1] Following her time spent in Montreal, Mattes would go on to curate a number of shows in Winnipeg while working as the curator-in-residence at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Some of the exhibitions curated during her time at the Winnipeg Art Gallery include the exhibition Re:Collections – First Nations Photography (1999) as well as the touring exhibition Robert Hule: Sovereignty over Subjectivity(1999) where Mattes was the assistant curator.[1] Mattes’ exhibition Rielisms was toured in Canada, first showing at the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina May 12th to July 8th of 2001. Rielisms was a visual extension of her graduate thesis which studied and questioned the perception of Louis Riel through portraiture and further asked the question “Whose hero is Louis Riel?”.[5] Once again, in collaboration with the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Mattes as a guest curator put together the exhibition Gatherings: Aboriginal Art from the Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2002.[6] Mattes’ exhibition Gatherings features works of twenty Aboriginal artists spanning over four decades in an effort to show the shift of art making across time.[6] During her time as the guest curator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Mattes also curated the exhibition Lita Fontaine: Without Reservation in 2002. This exhibition explored artist Lita Fontaine’s reclamation of her Aboriginal identity.[4] In 2005 Mattes curated the exhibition Vestiges which showcased artwork of Shirley Brown. Vestiges was exhibited both at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.[7]
