Cathy Byrd
Cathy A. Byrd is an American writer, independent curator, podcaster, and cultural advocate.[1]
Early life and education
Byrd was born in Midland, Texas.[2] She attended [[Southwest Texas State University][3] and studied in Europe before joining the Peace Corps from 1976 to 1978.[4] In the Peace Corps, she taught French literacy in the Ivory Coast, Africa.[5] In 1995, she earned an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.[6]
Career
Byrd taught at [[Atlanta College of Art][7] and has written articles for Art Papers,[8][9][10][11] Creative Loafing,[12] Sculpture[13] and produced a podcast episode for Contemporary magazine.[14] In 2001, Byrd served as Director of Georgia State University, Welch School of Art and Design Gallery.[15] She curated notable projects, re/constructing Atlanta: A Contemporary Continuum in 2008 and New Wave Atlanta: When Urban Intervention Speaks French in 2009.[16] In 2009, Byrd became Executive Director and Curator of Maryland Art Place (MAP)[17] in Baltimore, Maryland.
Fresh Art International (podcast)
In 2011, Byrd launched one of the first art-centered podcasts fully produced by a woman.[18] Fresh Art International audio podcast is an independent platform developed to feature artists, curators, and cultural producers around the world. Over 300 episodes have featured the voices of artists including Mark Bradford, Amy Sherald, Theaster Gates, Joan Jonas, Carolee Schneemann, Tania Bruguera, ORLAN, William Pope.L, Cecilia Alemani, Edwidge Danticat, Hoor Al Qasimi, Marina Reyes Franco, Bahar Behbahani, Charles Gaines (artist), Andrea Fatona, Teresita Fernández, and Jillian Hernández.[19] The ongoing project will end in 2026.
