Cayce Zavaglia

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Cayce Zavaglia (b.1971) is an American-born painter turned embroidery artist known for her oversized, photorealistic embroidered portraits of friends and family. Trained in painting, Zavaglia switched to embroidery in 2002 in an effort to establish a non-toxic studio environment, inspired by an embroidery piece she made as a child growing up in Australia.[1] Zavaglia earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL in 1994. Four years later in 1998, Zavaglia received an MFA in painting from Washington University, Saint Louis, MO.

Her work is entirely hand-sewn, allowing Zavaglia to mimic the appearance of brush strokes in the stitches. Through a great deal of trial error, she eventually developed a technique inspired by Pointillism and Impressionism.[2]
