Cedrek L. McFadden is an American colorectal surgeon and medical educator based in Greenville, South Carolina. He has been featured for public health communication and advocacy, including a 2021 profile by the National Environmental Education Foundation on his COVID-19 education work and a 2017 feature in The Greenville News about efforts to increase the number of Black physicians.[1][2]
McFadden has appeared as a medical contributor on NBC’s Today in segments about colorectal cancer screening and men’s health.[3][4][5][6] His expertise has also been cited by national consumer-health media such as Prevention.[7]

Early life and education
McFadden completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana and earned his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. He trained in general surgery at Greenville Health System/University of South Carolina and completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Georgia Colon and Rectal Surgery Clinic in Atlanta.
Medical career
McFadden is board-certified in colon and rectal surgery. He joined Prisma Health, where he has served in leadership roles including Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Surgery. He holds a faculty appointment as a clinical associate professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.
He has authored peer-reviewed research on rectal cancer and surgical education, including work on differential lymph node retrieval in rectal cancer,[11] the history of social media in surgery,[12] and health advocacy through digital platforms.[13] He also co-authored a chapter on practice adaptation during crisis in the Springer volume The SAGES Manual of Strategy and Leadership (2024).[14]
Media work
McFadden has been a recurring medical contributor to NBC’s Today, appearing in segments covering colorectal cancer screening,[15] key health numbers for men,[16] screening checklists,[17] and patient self-advocacy.[18] He has also been interviewed by national outlets including Entertainment Weekly and Parade during his appearance on Survivor.[19][20]
He has also appeared as a podcast guest, including Jennie Garth’s I Choose Me, where he discussed men’s health and preventive care,[21] and Positively Gam in the episode “Why All Men Should See A Doctor”.[22] His guidance has been cited by consumer health media such as Prevention.[23]
Public health communication and advocacy
During the COVID-19 pandemic, McFadden was interviewed by the National Environmental Education Foundation about vaccine messaging, health disparities, and the importance of clear public health education.[24] He also contributed to community Q&A sessions and televised segments addressing coronavirus and preventive health measures.[25]
In 2017, McFadden was featured in a Greenville News article about efforts to increase representation of Black male physicians. He discussed launching public-awareness initiatives such as the social media campaign “#BlackMenInMedicine,” speaking in schools, churches, and community settings, and participating in medical pipeline programs like MedEx Academy.[26]
Television
In 2025, McFadden was announced as a contestant on season 48 of the CBS reality television series Survivor.[27] He was profiled in national outlets including Entertainment Weekly and Parade during the season.[28][29]
Awards and recognition
In 2023, McFadden received the national Sharecare Award in the “Sharing Care” category for his health video We Are Never Alone.[30] He is also a Liberty Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.[31]
