Celeste Barber (born May 6, 1982) is an Australian comedian, actress and media personality.[1] Barber started out as a television actress in popular Australian series, All Saints, where she portrayed character ‘Bree Matthews’. This was followed by many film and television appearances in Australia.[2] Barber has also had a successful career as a comedian, participating in many stand-up shows and comedy festivals, both nationally and internationally.[3]
In recent years, Barber's popularity has grown on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, due to her satirical recreation of celebrity images. As a result of her comedic posts, Barber's following has grown to 5.7 million people on Instagram.[4] In 2018, Barber published her autobiography, Challenge Accepted!, which is a memoir about her personal life and career.[5] In addition, Barber has become increasingly active in the fashion industry, as seen through her collaboration with internationally renowned fashion designer, Tom Ford.[6]
Barber is widely regarded as a "social media superstar," as well as Instagram’s "funniest lady".[7] Admirers have described her as an inspiration to embrace reality and not regard celebrity culture as a normal standard.[6]
Early Life[edit]
Barber was born on 6 May, 1982 in New South Wales, Australia.[5] She has an older sister Olivia, whom she regards as being a significant inspiration behind her initial Instagram posts, as well as a close friend.[5] Barber describes her family as small but very close.[5]
She attended high school in New South Wales, which she has described as an unpleasant experience due to her inability to concentrate and perform as a result of he Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD).[5] Barber describes her teachers as impatient and unhelpful in her schooling experience, having no regard to her condition.[5] She describes herself as a loud and funny student at school.[5]
At the age of 16, Barber was officially diagnosed with ADD and was prescribed with medication, namely Ritalin, which made a notable difference to her in allowing her to better concentrate and focus in school.[5]
Education[edit]
After finishing high school, Barber graduated from the Western Sydney University with a Bachelor of Performance, Theater and Film in 2002.[3] In 2003, she then completed the AFTRS Actor/Director Course, "Into the Frame", with Ross McGregor.[3] Barber also went on to complete a sketch comedy writing course at Second City in 2013.[5]
Career[edit]
Early Career 2005-2012[edit]
Barber has been active since 2005.[3] Her first television acting role was on the Australian television series All Saints, where she portrayed a paramedic named Bree Matthews, appearing in 88 episodes.[2] Whilst acting in this television series, Barber also undertook a role in Australian film Burke & Wills in 2006, where she played a character named Jackie.[8] Notably, this film was a finalist at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006.[1] Barber was also a writer and performer on The Matty Johns Show on 7 Network.[1] In her early career, Barber also participated in many theater productions , including The Rules of the Game, Ten Tits Sketch Comedy and Boyband Candy, as well as playing the lead role in Homespun Liz.[3]
Barber regards her early career in acting to be more focused on serious roles.[5] In 2010, she appeared in two episodes of the Australian television soap opera Home and Away.[1] As her career progressed, Barber discovered her talent in and love for comedy, and hence began to appear in a variety of comedic roles in television, theater, television mini-series and short films.[9] In addition to acting, Barber also gained experience as a writer in various short videos, including Office Correctness and Late Night Angel Weenie Baby, where she both wrote and acted.[1]
Television and Film[edit]
As her career grew in comedy, Barber began to have recurring roles in multiple television series, both as herself as well as fictional characters. These include recurring roles on Home and Away, Wonderland and How Not to Behave.[3] Barber has also had a recurring role as panelist on Have you Been Paying Attention? since 2016.[10] In addition, Barber had her own web-series called Office Correctness, where she was a main writer and actress.[1] Other television shows in which Barber has featured include 20-1 on the Nine Network, Wham Bam Thank you Mam, the 7pm Project and Studio 10 on the Ten Network, and Top 40 Eurovision Songs.[3]
Since 2017, Barber has been a part of the television series 'the Letdown', where multiple women, including her character 'Barbara', portray the complexities of motherhood.[11] This series has recently been picked up by Netflix for international distribution.[12]
Comedy[edit]
Barber has been involved in multiple stand up comedy festivals and tours.[1] Her first notable stand-up performance was in the Sydney Comedy Fringe Festival at the Factory Theater in 2014.[3] In 2015, Barber performed at both the Sydney Comedy Festival and the Melbourne International Raw Comedy Festival, in which she finished as a semi-finalist.[1] Barber embarked on her first national tour in 2017, namely the Celeste Barber Challenge Accepted! National tour.[3] Throughout this tour, she illustrated the double standards of Instagram in her segment 'Allowed or Not Allowed'.[9] In this segment, Barber discussed her rapidly growing Instagram following as she continues to challenge celebrity culture by comparing it to reality. This tour was regarded as extremely popular, and sold out in 24 hours of ticket release.[13]
Most recently in November 2018, Barber began her second tour titled 'Celeste Barber Live', where she intends to perform over 25 comedy shows across the United States of America.[13] On this tour, Barber is accompanied by her husband, two younger children and the youngest of her two step-daughters, in addition to her assistant and best friend.[13] Barber has openly discussed her intention to continue to work in the United States of America, whilst also maintaining her primary residence in Australia.[14] Barber has been regarded as the queen of comedy in Australia, as well as an international comedy sensation.[15] Her fun-loving and self deprecating persona resonates with people around the world, as she uses humor as her medium to expose the unattainable celebrity lifestyle.[7]
Instagram[edit]
Instagram has been the social media platform from which Barber began her rapidly growing trend #challengeaccepted.[4] This hashtag represents Barber's parodying of celebrity images, whereby she recreates the pictures of actresses, models and other celebrities, in order to showcase society's obsession with celebrity culture and lifestyle. Barber's satirical posts were not originally intended to have a societal message, rather they served as personal challenge between her and her sister, Olivia.[7] However, her posts have grown to become a central part of her career, and are leading to more work as a comedian.[15] Barber now entertains 5.7 million followers on Instagram with her parody images.[4] In addition to the growth in her career, Barber's posts, which began as cheeky and fun, have grown to represent a wider movement of self-love and acceptance, as women in society are constantly faced with unrealistic expectations.[16] Although this was unintentional, Barber acknowledges that this body positive movement is important, and is pleased that her posts can be viewed as a comment on sexism and the media, and make women feel good about their reality.[14] Her anti-it girl persona inspires people to embrace themselves and disregard society's obsession with celebrities.[16] Barber acknowledges her fame to be of little importance in her life, and states that she wants to move beyond social media fame in her career.[14]Barber has been widely regarded as a social media star, and her comedic Instagram posts have been admired by various celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon, who both describe her as hilarious.[5]
Fashion[edit]
Barber's success as a comedian on Instagram has led to her increased involvement in the Fashion Industry.[13] International fashion designer Tom Ford regards her as hilarious and uplifting, as she is does not take herself too seriously and is light heartedly self-deprecating.[13] He particularly regards this as refreshing in the fashion industry. His admiration is exemplified in his collaboration with the comedian for 2018 New York Fashion Week.[13] In this collaboration, he encourages Barber that she is beautiful and does not need to lose any weight.[13] Additionally, Barber was the subject of a Vogue Australia photoshoot in September 2018 in collaboration with Tom Ford, whereby a satirical and light hearted clip showcases her comedy.[17] Barber has since become friends with Ford, describing him as delightful.[14]In March 2019, Barber hosted a high-end fashion awards ceremony, namely the 5th annual Daily Front Row Awards in Beverly Hills, California.[18] This award ceremony introduced Barber to various celebrities in the fashion industry including singer and actress Lady Gaga, and Victoria Secret models Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Candice Swanepoel.[18]
Literature[edit]
In 2018, Barber released her autobiography titled Challenge Accepted!, which has been described as a hilarious and outspoken guide to life, whereby she reveals her thoughts and experiences with reality, love, friendship, family and marriage.[15] In addition, Barber discusses her rapidly growing fame and influence on social media, particularly Instagram, of which she regards of little importance in reality.[5] Through her memoir, Barber both explicitly and implicitly encourages the values of self-acceptance, fun, and light hearted self-deprecation in the wake of an increasingly social media focused society.[7]
In various interviews, Barber acknowledges the difficulties of writing a book, as she compares it to childbirth and raising children.[7] Barber states that although she loves what she has written, she will not consider writing another piece of literature in the near future.[14]
Other[edit]
Barber is currently working on a podcast series with Luminary Podcasts titled 'Celeste and her Best'.[19]
In 2019, Barber has aligned with fresh meal delivery service Hello Fresh with a social media video series titled Skewered, by Celeste Barber.[20] Barber, along with other Australian celebrities such as Alex Perry, Elyse Knowles and Sophie Monk cook together in promotion of Hello Fresh.[20]
Personal Life[edit]
Barber has two biological children to her husband Api Robinson, whom also has two older daughters to his previous partner.[5] Barber notes that she has been as stepmother since the age of 21, and regards her blended family as close.[5]
In an interview on the Nine Network, Barber discusses that she underwent open heart surgery in her mid twenties, which is a serious emergency procedure that she was not expecting.[14] This surgery led to a high risk pregnancy due to the fragility of the heart in childbirth.[5] Barber regards this experience is eye opening, as it changed her perspective on her surroundings, encouraging her to move on from any hardships that she had faced, and to not pay attention to other people's opinions of her.[14]
