Center for Intersectional Justice
The Center for Intersectional Justice (CIJ) is an independent nonprofit organisation based in Berlin, focusing on combating intersecting forms of structural inequality and discrimination in Europe.[1] The organization is headed by president Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw and founder and executive director Emilia Roig.[2]
Work
The Center for Intersectional Justice describes its work as focusing on three areas: advocacy, research, and training.[3]
Advocacy
The Center for Intersectional Justice advocates for legal recognition of intersectional discrimination and effective anti-discrimination policy measures by engaging with policy and lawmakers at national and trans-national levels. It also provides decision-makers with practical policy advice and recommendations to improve anti-discrimination legislation.[4]
Research
To make anti-discrimination laws and policies more effective, CIJ researches and monitors their effects and analyzes processes of intersectional discrimination and structural inequality. Through its network of experts and partner academic institutions, CIJ translates its research findings into practical input aimed at government bodies, law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and German and European courts.[5]
Training
CIJ organizes lectures and discussions focused on educating participants on the concept of intersectionality and intersectional political issues, such as the headscarf ban for judges[6]. It also funds empowerment workshops for people affected by intersectional discrimination.[7]
Structure
CIJ’s executive board consists of president Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw and executive director and founder Emilia Roig. Its advisory board has eight members from the academic and professional world. In addition to their staff, CIJ also has over 30 associated experts.[8]
