The Center for the Study of Economy and Society (CSES), housed in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, is a research center dedicated to the advancement of economic sociology. The Center was established in 2001 and takes its name from Max Weber's magnum opus, Economy and Society.
History[edit]
The Center for the Study of Economy and Society was founded in 2001 with a grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies by then-Provost Carolyn Martin.[1] The Center grew out of a series of conferences and seminars organized by founding director Victor Nee focusing on the new institutionalisms in economic sociology. The mission of CSES, to extend the core ideas and insights of Max Weber's pioneering work in economic sociology, was developed by Victor Nee in collaboration with Richard Swedberg.
In 2019, Filiz Garip, Professor of Sociology at Cornell University and previously at Harvard University, was appointed Director.[2][3] In 2021, Victor Nee returned to his former role as Director of the Center for the Study of Economy and Society.
Research[edit]
The Center for the Study of Economy and Society serves as an incubator for research in economic sociology. CSES provides graduate training to doctoral students and hosts a variety of lectures and seminars. Fellows and research affiliates of CSES include prominent social scientists from sociology, economics, political science, and related fields, such as Francis Fukuyama, Mark Granovetter, Theda Skocpol, Paul DiMaggio, James Robinson, Walter W. Powell, Harrison White, Howard Aldrich, Peter Katzenstein, Richard Alba, and Duncan J. Watts among others.[4]
CSES has sponsored research on a diverse array of topics, including the emergence of capitalism in China, the rise of the New York City tech economy, and immigration and assimilation.[5] In 2021, CSES hosted a lecture series titled, "The American State in a Multipolar World," featuring Francis Fukuyama, Joseph Nye, Jeffrey Sachs, and Andrew Bacevich.[6] The series covered the evolving role of the U.S. state in global politics during a period marked by international crises.[7]
