Centre of Excelence Altiero Spinelli (CeAS) was founded in 2003 at Roma Tre University with the financial contribution of the European Commission, within the framework of the Jean Monnet Action for the establishment of university centres of excellence, to support research and training activities in the field of European integration studies.[1]

The Centre is dedicated to Altiero Spinelli, one historically important figure of European federalism, whose work and whose commitment, since the “Manifesto of Ventotene”, marked the start of the integration process and its development, in particular with the 1984 Draft Treaty establishing the European Union (commonly known as “Spinelli Project”), which has become a major source of inspiration for all the European Union (EU) Treaties.[2]

There are two further centres "Altiero Spinelli" in Italy, one at the University Sapienza[3] and a federal one in Latina, called "Istituto di Studi Federalisti Altiero Spinelli". [4]

After a three years grant agreement period, CeAS continued to carry out its mission for the promotion and development of research and study activities in the field of European integration, through a variety of actions ranging from research projects (such as the “success story” Europe at school: How to become European citizens), to advanced training courses (such as the post-graduate course in Cittadinanza europea e integrazione euromediterranea), publications (such as the biannual journal La cittadinanza europea, the monographs series Quaderni del Centro Altiero Spinelli, the International Catalogue), Working Papers, the EuroViews blog, Open didactic materials, along with the organisation of conferences, seminars and cultural events (such as the Giornate per l’Europa-Europe Days, the international award Cittadinanza Europea). More recently (2017-2020) CeAS was the recipient of the grant for the carrying out of the Horizion 2020 project Terrorsim Prevention Via Radicalisation Counter-Narrative (TRIVALENT) and started publishing the quarterly online scientific journal lce online.[5]

CeAS networking has been developed since its foundation internationally through a wide range of relationships with universities, research centres and high education institutions.[6]

Since the beginning of its activities CeAS has been chaired and directed by Prof. Luigi Moccia, Jean Monnet Chair of European Union Law and Institutions.[7] [8]
