Chalk of shame

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The chalk of shame is visual education that helps raise awareness about the health effects of tobacco and pollution. The activism involves highlighting littered cigarette butt filters with chalk to publicize tobacco control policies that fail at the level of enforcement or lack thereof. It strives to create social pressure to encourage the denormalization of smoking in public places.

Background

Tobacco smoking and secondhand smoke exposure kill more than 8 million people every year worldwide.[1] Addiction to nicotine only exacerbates the problem with littering, as cigarette butts are the most littered waste item on the planet.[2] Cigarette filters are made of a plastic called cellulose acetate. When tossed into the environment, they can take as long as ten years to decompose. Cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals into water, raising environmental impact concerns. Many home and apartment fires, as well as some of the most catastrophic forest fires, have been started by dropped cigarette butts.

Strategy

Chalk of shame at a tram station (PST Aleje Solidarnosci) in Poznan, Poland. The inscription 'pety na ziemi' translates to English as "butts on the ground."

Chalk of shame consists of one chalk circle for each cigarette butt, while the cigarettes remain where they are. The resulting cluster of colorful rings is labeled with a message.

Origin

The idea to circle littered cigarette butts with chalk originated in Poznan, Poland.[3][4][5][6]

Impact

International news outlets in Poland, India, Germany, and Spain have reported on the chalk circles while informing the general public about the negative health effects of smoking and how cigarette butts are toxic waste and have collateral effects on humans, animals, and the environment.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Some schools have used the chalk of shame as a teaching activity to educate students about the dangers of smoking.[15][16]

Notable chalk of shame campaigns

The public transit system managed and operated by Municipal Transport Company and Public Transport Authority in Poznan is a location of ongoing chalk of shame activism. The news media covered the activities at Lechicka/Poznan Plaza on March 14th, 2021[17][18], stations at Rondo Śródka on May 30th, 2021[19], and at the Poznan Main station on June 27th, 2021.[20]

On July 21st, 2021, an environmental health advocate pointed out with chalk all the cigarette butts in front of the El Corte Inglés department store located on Aragon street in Palma, Mallorca.[21][22]

A group of youth in Pune, India on January 12, 2022 launched a chalk of shame campaign to denounce littering cigarette butts.[23]
