Chand Mia (died October 29, 1977) was a freedom fighter of the Liberation war of Bangladesh and awarded Bir Protik, the fourth highest award for gallantry, for his role in the freedom movement of Bangladesh.[1][2]
Early life and education
Chand Mia was born in Gazaria Upazila of Munshiganj District in Bangladesh. His father’s name is Fajar Ali Bepari, his mother’s name is Haseban Bibi and his wife is Kachmeri Begum. He has five sons. Chand Mia joined the 2nd East Bengal Regiment of Pakistan Army as a Senior JCO (Shubedar).
Liberation war
In March 1971, Chand Mia led a revolt with other Bengali Sepoys of the regiment. Under his leadership, people captured the armoury as well as Gazipur Ordinance Factory and collected a huge amount of ammunition. He was an active Mukti joddha of Sector No. 3 and took part in various operations at Fatikchari, Nazirhat, Hath hajari, and Manikchari village areas. On December 2, 1971, at Akhaura locality, Mukti Bahini headed by Lieutenant Badi-uj-jaman, were fighting with Pakistan Army. After the unfortunate death of Lieutenant Badi, Chand Mia took charge over the team and succeeded in the attack operation. On July 29, 1971, he also ambushed in army camp in Paruldia Bazar and killed three associates of the Pakistani army.[1][3]
Aftermath
After independence, Chand Mia was posted in Bagura Army Barrack as a Major Subedar of 22nd East Bengal Regiment of Bangladesh Army. On October 29, 1977, a mutiny was formed in the barrack. Thereafter, he became traceless.
Awards
On 15 December 1973, Subedar Chand Mia was awarded the fourth highest Gallantry award of Bangladesh, Bir Protik. His name had been recorded in the 1973’s official gazette, Sl. no. 60.
