Chandana Jayalath (Sinhala: චන්දන ජයලත්) is a Sri Lankan Professor in Quantity Surveying, Chartered Quantity Surveyor, Accredited Mediator and Expert Witness. Renowned as a social activist in recent times, Chandana has authored a few textbooks for Quantity Surveying students, namely Contractual Dimensions in Construction.[1] Arguing Construction Claims[2][3][4], Ethical Landscape in Quantity Surveying, Construction Steering along the Aphorism of Good Governance[5], Construction Corruption; a Threshold of Human Misery. He is a product of University of Moratuwa belonging to its 2nd intake for the B.Sc Hons degree in Quantity Surveying.
Chandana is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK, a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK and a Fellow of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Sri Lanka. He is the principal author of the first ever Normative Dictionary of Quantity Surveying[6], principal author of the Guidelines for Construction Adjudication in Sri Lanka. He is instrumental in setting up ICTAD Enlisted Construction Adjudicators. He was a member of the drafting committee to the Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement of Sri Lanka. He has conducted over 80 Continuing Professional Development sessions internationally. He is a mentor for RICS, MBA, MSc and LLM post graduate studies, a Counselor to Assessment of Professional Competence of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK. He is also a researcher in construction and education circles and a reviewer of Journal of Dispute Resolution in the Construction Industry and International Journal of Construction Management.
Chandana used to be a columnist for many Sri Lankan newspapers on social and national issues and a frequent writer to various scientific magazines and a frequent speaker at social forums[7][8][9][10][11]. He has published over 100 feature articles on various public and social issues construed from the perspective of Quantity Surveying[12][13][14][15][16][17]
He is the first ever Sri Lankan Quantity Surveying graduate to join the Sri Lankan Forces in the rank of Captain. He was conferred with Poornaboomi medal in recognition of active service in various districts that were regarded as theaters of the Sri Lankan Civil War. He was conferred Riviresa campaign medal which was presented to all ranks of the regular and volunteer forces of the Military of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Police, as well as civilians that were involved in planning or assisting Operation Riviresa (17 October 1995 - 5 December 1995), one of the most notable successes of the Sri Lankan forces during Eelam War III . His novel, Doopath Wasiyo, portrays a fair cross section of the Sri Lankan state service. Doopath Wasiyo is a Godage Publication. Chandana was recently awarded Maithree Sasana Prabodhaka by the Sri Lanka Methmuni Society as a token of gratitude for his religious and social contribution.
