Chandrashekhara Shivacharya is a Hindu spirutual leader also known as Kashi Peetha Jagadguru. He is 86th Pontiff of the Shri Kashi Peetha, located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Biography[edit]

Chandrashekhar Shivacharya is a a peethadhipati (pontiff) of Sri Jagadguru Vishvaradhya Gnanasimhasana Jangamawadi math, located at Varanasi, India. He was born in small village in the northern part of Karnataka to Siddaiah Puranmath (a school headmaster) and Shavantramma. He is the second son in the family. He is scholar in Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and Kannada languages. He has huge number of disciples in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharastra states. He also has disciples in Russia, Nepal and other countries.

Swamji has completed his Primary and Secondary education in Byadgi and Guledgudd. Later he has joined Amareshwar Swamiji's ashram continued his studies. He has been sent to Shrimadveerashaiva Gurukul and Shrimadveerashaiva Warad Pathashala, Solapur between 1963-1969 to pursue Sanskrit education.

  • Ph.D.: Siddhantashikhamanerdarsanantariya Siddhantaihisaha Samiksha (it is a comparative study of Siddhantashikhamani with other six Indian schools of thought).
  • D.Litt.: Shaktivisistadvaitatattvatrayavimarsah (the study critically evaluates the origin, development and usefulness of the three tenets of Veerashaiva Philosophy-Astaavarana,Panchachara and Shatasthala.

Debate[edit]

Chandrashekhara Shivacharya participated in the All India Sanskrit Debate Competition held at Guruvayur, Kerala and won the First Prize in Vedanta.[1]

Jagadguru (Pontiff)[edit]

He became the 86th Jagadguru of Kashi Gnanasimhasana, Jangamwadimath, Varanasi on 17 November 1989.

He started to provide free food for the pilgrims coming to Varanasi. Every day thousands of people eat prasad here. Also, Shaiva Bharati Pratishthan publishing was founded here. Many Agams and other important texts of this tradition were translated and printed in it. Moreover, on Mahashivaratri, on the day of birth of the founder of this lineage of Virashivaism, Jagadguru Vishvaradhya, in math scientists gathering is held (Vidvat Sabha), where one of the scientists receives an annual award for his outstanding service. Moreover, talented poor students studying engineering sciences or medicine receive help . Students of Sanskrit faculties also receive stipend. More than 100 students already studied under his provision. Moreover, he have established several educational institutions. In Andhra Pradesh he have started a Vedic University. In Gadag, a school for studying Vedas. In Latur, Maharashtra state, he has opened a dormitory. In Varanasi, he have opened elementary school providing studies in English. In this way he have been working in scientific, educational and social spheres. Now he wants to expand activities to Gujarat, Rajastan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala states.

Chandrashekhar Shivacharya organized a program for celebrating the 100 years of the Sri Jagadguru Vishwaradhya Gurukula Pathashala called as Shatamanothsava and Veerashiava Mahakumbha. A huge number of people attended the celebration from all over India. Even Russian devotees took part in this. This celebration has taken place in Jangamawadimath, Varanasi and was celebrated from 15th January 2020 to 21st February 2020. 15th February 2020 Addapallaki procession of Panchapeetha Jagadgurus has taken place in Varanasi city for 12 kilometers. The Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi[2][3][4][5] , Governor of Uttar Pradesh Shri Anandiben Patel, Governor of Himachal Pradesh Shri. Bandaru Dattatreya,Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri. Yediyurappa, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri. Yogi Adityanath, Former Union Home Minister Shri. Shivraj Patil, Shamanur Shivashankarappa were some of the Political leaders and prominent personalities who took part in this celebrations. Narendra Modi has launched the Mobile app of Siddhanta Shikhamani sacred book, which is translated into 19 languages:Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Odia, Bhojpuri language, Russian language, Tamil language, Malayalam and etc.
