Chanel Ayan (born Pillott Ayan) is a Kenyan fashion model and actress of Somalian descent. She is the first model of African descent to appear on magazine covers in Dubai and the Middle East.[1] She has modeled for brands like Piaget, Amato Couture, Moschino, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana.[2] Chanel is currently based in Dubai [3]

Early life[edit]

Chanel Ayan was born in Malanba, a small village in the border between Kenya and Uganda. She grew up and attended school in Kenya and Uganda at the same time. She and her five siblings were all raised by her mother because her father had drinking problems. One of her brother is a lawyer, while the other is an engineer at Apple. Her sister lives in South Africa, working for a Tourism Company, another sister is a nurse in Sweden.[4]

Ayan revealed that her real name is not Chanel Ayan but Pillott Ayan,[citation needed] she changed it after watching a movie in which the character Chanel resonated with her background. Ayan means Lucky in Somalian language.[5]

Ayan was introduced to modelling when her cousin who lived in Sweden visited and told her to consider being a model because she looked like one, she also gave her fashion magazines to help hone her modelling skills. After then, she began to do commercials in Kenya, for Bazaar and Coca-cola. She left Kenya when she was 17 and moved to Brazil before proceeding to New York to work with Elite Models.[6] Ayan did a lot of shows in New York, she did Michael Kors show, Moschino. Her first cover of vogue was also in America, followed by Vogue Italia.[7]

In 2005, Ayan moved to Dubai and became the first black model to grace magazine covers. She did the Emirates airline campaign and Dubai Tourism company.[8][9]

She has since been the face of top brands like Piaget, Amato Couture, and part of Channel, Moschino, Dior, Dolce Gabbana, Van Cleef, Loius Vuiton.[10]

Ayan recently worked with Fenty makeup owned by Rihanna in Dubai, when she came to do a promotional photo-shoot for her Fenty make-up brand.[11]
