Chantal Stoman, born on June 23, 1968[1] is a French photographer who lives in Paris.

Her work is an in-depth observation of the relationship between people, intimacy, and places.

Biography

After completing her studies at the Hadassa Institute of Photography, she started her career as a fashion photographer. For ten years, she constructed her very own "fashion-reportage" aesthetic.[2]

From 2005 she oriented her work on more personal projects. During her first stay in Japan, in 2005, fascinated by the special relationship Japanese women have with European luxury brands, she decided to carry out her first personal project : A Woman’s Obsession. This first project received the support of Chanel[3]. It has been exhibited in France, Japan and New York and a catalogue has been edited.

With her next project, Lost Highway : a Photo project, realized between 2008 and 2012 along the flyovers of the biggest cities of the world, Chantal Stoman reflects on the proximity between all these inhabitants, linked by the same road, everywhere in the world. This project is a journey into the furtive intimacy of humanity, hidden in the heart of the great cities. From the aerial highways of Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Cairo, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Lost highway recounts a tale shared by them all, where borders no longer exist. The first part of this project has been exhibited in a monumental exhibition in Paris' subway "Châtelet" on the occasion of Nuit Blanche 2009[4].

With this project, Chantal Stoman's exhibitions take an itinerant approach and anchor themselves in the public space by taking the form of urban installations. This is how in 2010 the project was visible on a Brussels cablecar[5]. The project has since been presented in France at the Palais de Chaillot, Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, on the occasion of the Mois de la photo in Paris[6] then in Mumbai[7] and Kyoto.

Chantal Stoman then traveled to Rome, invited to stay at the Villa Médicis in spring 2013[8] to work on her new project, L'Image Culte, initiated and guided by a dialogue with the writer Erri de Luca[9] . The photographer begins a transition towards a philosophical reflection on the image and its place in our societies which will then continue in her successive projects.

In 2015, she went to Jérusalem where she created Walking Distance, a photographic project testifying to her curiosity for “myth cities” which tell, deep down, a story and which make History. What is Eternal? History, the trace. In Rome, then in Jerusalem, the photographer sought for several weeks to perceive eternity.[10].

In 2016, the artist was invited by the Institut Français in residence to Phnom Penh[11]. Chantal Stoman immerses herself in the intimacy of this city whose landscape, designed by human occupation, offers multiple layers of memory to the eye. Vestiges given a life of their own which will become the subject of the VIEWS project. She also carries out workshops there. This project was the subject of a monumental installation during the Grand Paris Photo Month on the windows of the Conservatoire de Montreuil, created by the architect Claude le Goas, transforming the building into a giant "lightbox"[12].

In 2017, Chantal Stoman went to the small Japanese town Ōme. First coming for a short project, she will end up making numerous return trips and start a project that will last more than three years. There she will produce Ōmecittà, an observation of the passion for cinema in this small town, or rather the vestiges of it. A project once again focused on the links between memory and image for which Chantal Stoman receives the Soutien à la photographie documentaire contemporaine from the CNAP[13]. In addition to the photographic project, the artist also produced her first creative documentary.[14].

During the pandemic, in 2022, the photographer had to go to the Bagneux cemetery, in Paris region. There, she noticed the very old ceramic medallions from the graves which became the starting point for the project Ça a été (2022), a reflection on disappearance[15].
