Chao Ngin (เจ้าหงิญ) is a fiction written by Thai author บินหลา สันกาลาคีรี Binlah Sonkalagiri. The book is about eight shorts stories composed together into one narrative. The author depicts people, animals, and objects to be the protagonist in the tales. Each narrative holds a different mood, but all conveys meaningful lessons. Chao Ngin is full of beautiful narrative and discerning thought. The writer uses words and letters creatively especially the name ‘เจ้าหงิญ’ which comes from the swap of words (สันกาคีรี, 2017). The novel was awarded the S.E.A. Write Award (Southeast Asian Writers Award) of Thailand in 2005.
Synopsis[edit]
1. ชายเดียวดายแห่งภูเขาภาคเหนือ (Lonely Man of The Northern Mountain)[edit]
The story was about a man who lived alone in the North. He decided to visit his niece in the South. Bringing the seeds with him as a present, he started the journey relentlessly. One night, something happened that completely changed his mind.
2. แดฟโฟดิลแสนไกล (Distant Daffodil)[edit]
Once upon a time, the princess went to study in a land far away. She told a boy she’d come back, but she didn’t. Instead, a certain type of flower was sent to the boy. He planted it in a drought field. People started to came to see the flower. In fact, the flower was just a weed. All villagers then called him ‘Daffodil boy’ and mocked him. In the end, he did what his heart told him to do.
3. เจ้าหญิงเสียงเศร้าแห่งดวงดาวที่สี่ (A Sorrow Voice Princess on the Fourth Planet)[edit]
A prince found the voice recording containing a word from the princess. It made him went searching for her. He decided to go to Mars (fourth planet of the Solar System). He then found out that the princess wasn’t there. In fact, the fourth planet could be anywhere in the universe. An endless journey to find a sorrowful princess continued.
4. เก้าอี้ดนตรี (A Musical Chair)[edit]
The story was about a beautiful new chair brought to the school for the play ‘Music Chair’. However, the play was such a torment from the chair’s perspective. Consequently, she decided to fight back by making a number of accidents. She then was tossed out of the school. Finally, she met an ending that she yearned for.
5. สีที่แปดของรุ้งกินน้ำ (The Eighth Color of the Rainbow)[edit]
A stubborn princess lived in two castles owned by the king and queen who lived separately. She was spoiled by her parents as she would get whatever she wanted. One day, she saw a beautiful rainbow outside the palace. She then demanded to get one. As the time went by, she finally learned a meaningful lesson. In the end, she got the rainbow she always wanted, but in a different method.
6. นักเดินทางผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ (A Great Wanderer)[edit]
A tiny fish had a plan to find his princess. However, he was so afraid of the outside world that he then searched for a protection. At the very moment that he would step out on a journey, he saw a better, stronger shell.
7. ‘ลูกหาม’ กับสามสหาย (“Pupyp” and their three friends)[edit]
Seven great serpents had captured the princess. The king recruited a number of knights, fighters and soldiers to rescue his daughter. However, no one succeeded in bringing the princess back. One day, a parade of three puppies and a piggy, a cub, and a mouse approached him and offered to save the princess. A journey of three “Pupyp” and a “Pigyg”, a “Buc”, and a “Moeus” to rescue the “Pricenss” then started.
8. ‘โลก’ ของเจ้าหญิงนกบินหลากับเจ้าชายนกบินหา (The ‘World’ of the princess ‘Nok-Bin-lar’ and the prince ‘Nok-Bin-Har’)[edit]
The Story was about two birds together with one egg. They expected their child to be like their parents as they started giving him a precious present. It was a beautiful ending of all eight tales that tied the stories together. Together with the introduction written by the author himself in the beginning of the book, this chapter reflected the true meaning of the book and the inspiration of บินหลา สันกาลาคีรี (author) himself.
