The Chaos Emeralds (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) are a set of seven fictional artifacts that serve as a central plot device and gameplay element in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Introduced in the titular 1991 video game, the Chaos Emeralds are mystical gemstones possessing immense, near-infinite cosmic energy. Within the lore of the series, characters who harness the power of all seven Chaos Emeralds can trigger powerful transformations, most notably allowing the main protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog, to transform into the invincible "Super Sonic".[1]

Concept and creation

The Chaos Emeralds were designed by the Sonic Team in 1991 for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game. Initially, there were only six emeralds, and the color scheme varied. However, a seventh one was added in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to introduce the transformation 'Super Sonic'',[2] which was heavily inspired by the Super Saiyan transformation from Dragon Ball Z.[3]

Appearances

In video games

The Chaos Emeralds have appeared in virtually every mainline game in the Sonic series, starting from the series' debut title. There were initially 6 in said game, but it was bumped up to seven in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), which has remained consistent in the series since.

In film

In the film series, though the Chaos Emeralds were separate from the Master Emerald in the games, the Master Emerald was forged by the echidnas from the union of the seven Chaos Emeralds.[2] The Chaos Emeralds appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).
