Character Options

Character Options is a British toy company, notable for having both the Disney and Doctor Who toy licenses. It hit the headlines during 2007 as the UK distributor for the Bindeez range of products was recalled due to a dangerous chemical.

When the company began in 1991, it was formally known as Toy Options Ltd. and was the UK distributor of toys by the company Galoob, such as Micro Machines, before Galoob was brought out by Hasbro. They also distributed toys by the company Trendmasters such as the War Planets and Starcastle lines of toys in the 90's.

Doctor Who

5" Action Figures

In 2005 Character Options was granted the master toy licence to produce merchandise related to the revived televised series of Doctor Who. After the success of the Dalek Battle Packs (two remote controlled Daleks with either a Ninth Doctor or Rose Tyler action figure) at the end of 2005, increasingly larger waves of action figures were released in two scales; 5" during 2006 and a short-lived 12" range during 2007. Figures based off the first four series of the revival included variants of, the Ninth Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, companions such as Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, and Donna Noble, various secondary and minor characters, and alien enemies encountered such as Daleks, Cybermen, Slitheen, Autons, Clockwork Robots, Scarecrows, and Weeping Angels. From the success of the 5" line, the action figure range won the Toy Retailers Association's Boys Toy of the Year Award in 2006.

In 2010, figures from Series 5 were released, including variants of the newly introduced Eleventh Doctor, his companion Amy Pond, and new characters and monsters seen from the series. The packaging was updated with a different logo and design. Another Collect and Build wave was made, this time consisting of six figures and a piece to construct the Pandorica. Each piece contained an audiobook CD of a classic Doctor Who novelization.

3.75" Action Figures

In October 2012, Character announced that new figures would be made in 3.75" scale, and that no new 5" figures from the current series will be produced apart from re-releases and variants of existing figures, as well as occasional exclusive items. The classic line of Doctor Who action figures would however, still be produced in 5" scale. The figures produced have been based off the most recent TV series, beginning from Series 7, since 2013. Since the second wave, a Heritage Line was also produced which currently features earlier Daleks from before 2012. The range features Time Zone Sets, a series of connectable cardboard diorama playsets.

Miscellaneous

Other Doctor Who merchandise released by Character includes electronic FX replica Sonic Screwdrivers, the Character Building micro-figure and construction set line, electronic TARDIS moneybox, and various electronic masks in the forms of Daleks, the Dalek Sec Hybrid, Cybermen, and Judoon helmets. For the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, Character produced two collectable 12" Daleks in a Union Flag design for the UK, and stars and stripes for the USA.

Primeval

In 2007 Character Options announced they would also be creating Primeval action figures. These included a flying 'Rex' (developed by WowWee) and all main characters (Nick Cutter, Helen Cutter, Connor Temple and Abby Maitland to name a few), in addition some of the creatures (including future predators, Hesperonis and Dodos) and even plastic versions of anomalies. Character also released a large plush toy version of the team's "mascot", Rex. The line continued with the release of merchandise based on the second series of the show, after which the line was cancelled. Character Options no longer holds the license for Primeval merchandise.

The Sarah Jane Adventures

In 2007, Character Options released The Sarah Jane Adventures merchandise. The range started with Sarah Jane & Star Poet set, Sonic Lipstick & Wrist Scanner and Alien Communicator with Reporter's Pen & Notepad. Later figures included different figures of Sarah Jane Smith twin-packed with a monster from the series: a Child Slitheen, General Kudlak and a Graske. However, the line was cancelled due to lack of customer interest.

HM Armed Forces

In 2009, Character Options released the HM Armed Forces merchandise, designed by Character Options in conjunction with the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force to ensure the camouflage gear and weapons are authentic.

Bindeez

The Bindeez toy range was subject to a multi-national product recall after it was found that the Wangqi Product Factory in Shenzhen, China had substituted a cheap toxic chemical for the specified one in some shipped toys, resulting in the illness and hospitalisation of some children who ingested the beads. Argos and Amazon.co.uk both withdrew products for sale. See the voluntary recall from Character Options.

Peppa Pig

Character Options also produces toys based on the popular kids programme Peppa Pig.
