Charla Huber
Charla Huber (born February 11, 1982) is a Canadian journalist, columnist and communications professional. She is best known for her weekly column[1] [2] [3] [4] articles in the Victoria Times Colonist newspaper in Victoria, BC. Huber is Indigenous with Chipewyan and Inuit roots and is the Director of Communications and Indigenous Relations[5] at M'akola Housing Society, the largest Indigenous affordable housing provider in British Columbia. Huber is a well-known public speaker and speaks on her work in Indigenous Relations at many conferences each year.[6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Huber is also a member of the Victoria-Esquimalt Police Board[12] [13] appointed by the Province of British Columbia.
Early Life and Education
Huber was born in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, and was adopted.
Huber attended public school in Calgary, Alberta.[14] She earned a diploma in Journalism and Photojournalism in 2006 at Western Academy of Photography in Victoria, British Columbia and a Master of Arts in Professional Communication Degree from Royal Roads University in 2020, also in Victoria, British Columbia.
Career
Huber's career in journalism began at the age of 10 when her first article was published in the Calgary Kids Calendar. Huber's first full-time journalism job was in Pincher Creek, Alberta working for the Pincher Creek Echo and she later worked for Black Press at the Goldstream News Gazette.[15] [16]
She has been writing a weekly column in the Victoria Times Colonist newspaper since June 2017.[17]
Huber works in professional communications and Indigenous Relations for M'akola Housing Society and is passionate about bringing Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities together in partnership.
