The Republic of Charleia was a micronation located in Tyler, Texas. The capital was Independona. Charleia was comprised of five states: Activös, Bitziville, Magnifolio, Mooreivnia, and Xolera, as well as three territories: Loan Oak, Marable, and Quanah. The largest of these was the Marable territory. Charleia ended on May 31, 2022.
History
Charleia declared independence on May 7, 2017. Founded by Ian O'Halloran and Ashton Roberts, it was inspired by Molossia. In January 2020, Charleia was in a state of war against the Democratic Republic of Murcia. When the President of Murcia, Mason Adcock, attempted to overthrow the President Ian O'Halloran, the war remained cold, eventually resulting in the signing of the Treaty of Tyler on February 25, 2020. This resulted in the complete annexation of Murcia and the partition of its territory, establishing the new states of Xolera and Bitziville. Charleia joined the International Micro Community (IMC) and left on April 5, 2020, due to conflicts with the Republic of Errick. President O'Halloran stated, "Charleia joined the IMC looking for protection and support. Errick got us in two 'cold wars' between the IMC and COMSOV. I feel it’s safe to say, Errick is a power hungry tyrant who feels like he can do whatever he wants with the member states of the IMC, Errick really only cares about his own sovereignty." Charleia officially denounced Errick the same week. Later, on April 22, 2020, Charleia annexed the Empire of Activös through an invitation to join the Charleia, which the Activan government accepted. Later in 2020, Charleia joined the United Micronational Elite Community (UMEC) by the invitation of Hurikano, eventually establishing relations with many other micronations. Charleia remained an active member of UMEC until its dissolution. In July 2021, the Charleian State Intelligence Agency, along with other members of the UOU Security Council, was involved in an investigation that found Hristo Tommov of Bulgaria guilty of intellectual theft, impersonation of government officials, and threat to commit kidnapping. Eventually, this led to Tommov being banned from the UOU permanently. It was also the largest case handled by the CSIA. On December 1, 2021, former President Ian O'Halloran lost his bid for reelection in a run-off vote to William Luckenbach, who was sworn in on February 24, 2022. After a period of inactivity, it was decided that Charleia should come to an end on May 31, 2022. A statement released by the Charleian Government said, "Charleia has been a symbol of democracy, human rights, and general professionalism in the Micronational community for the past five years. Unfortunately, that must come to an end. It has been decided by the Charleian government that Charleia at midnight on May 31, 2022, Charleia will officially come to an end. We would like to thank all our allies and the countless unions who have welcomed us to this great community. Charleia has accomplished so much in the last years and that is due in large part to the people who had helped us succeed. We would like to also thank all our citizens for taking part in Charleia and believing in it. You have allowed Charleia to grow as much as it did. Charleia will live on in the memories of those who experienced it, took part in it, and participated in it. Thank you for everything."
Politics and government
Charleia was a constitutional republic with its second and final constitution being signed in 2021. It laid out a three-tiered system of government similar to that of the United States. The head of state and head of government was the President and the Vice-President, who were second in command. The Executive Branch was composed of the office of the President, Vice-President, and the Presidential Cabinet. The Cabinet was composed of the executive departments of Charleia. The legislative branch was composed of Congress, which had a bicameral setup. The upper house was the House of Representatives, and the lower house was the Senate, each being made up of five members, one from each state. The Judicial Branch was comprised of the Supreme Court, which was composed of one judge from each state, elected by their constituents. Charleia was a federal state, being comprised of five states and three territories. Each were allowed varying degrees of autonomy. States were allowed to govern themselves but were ultimately subordinate to federal law. Territories operated as constituent countries with free association to the Republic of Charleia. Territories could not vote in Congress or popular elections, but could vote in presidential elections.
Culture
Charleia followed conventional western traditions. Charleia was predominantly a Christian nation, with most of its citizens adhering to Protestant traditions. Charleia officially recognized five national holidays: New Years Day, Independence Day (May 7), UMEC Day (February 19), Thanksgiving, and Christmas. These were typically celebrated as mandatory "days of rest" where citizens would refrain from work.
