Charles Elliott Mitchell (May 11, 1837 – March 17, 1911) was an American lawyer and government official who served as the United States Commissioner of Patents from 1889 to 1891.[1][2][3][4]
Early life and legal career
Mitchell was born in Bristol, Connecticut, and studied at Williston Seminary, Brown University, and Albany Law School. He moved to New Britain, Connecticut, in 1864 and developed a patent-law practice before his appointment to the Patent Office.[2]
Commissioner of Patents
President Benjamin Harrison appointed Mitchell commissioner of patents, and Mitchell took office on April 1, 1889. During his tenure, he advocated for additional staffing, pay, space, and laboratory support for the Patent Office. He also presided over the Patent Centennial celebration in April 1891.[2]
Later career
Mitchell resigned in 1891 and resumed law practice in New York City. He later served as president and legal adviser of the Stanley Rule and Level Company.[2]
