Charles McClellan Talbert (born December 13, 1978)[1] is an American character actor and comedian. He is best known for his leading role as Angus Bethune in the 1995 comedy film Angus.

Life and career[edit]

Talbert was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Robin Talbert (nee. Houston).[1] At age 9, he witnessed the accidental killing of his mother's boyfriend Bradley H. Spiller.[2] Following the incident, he lived with his grandmother. He was discovered by Patrick Read Johnson at a Wendy's located in the Lake Forest Oasis near Lake Forest, Illinois in 1994 during the nationwide search for the lead role of Angus. His only prior acting experience was in a junior high class production of Macbeth.[3]

During the making of Angus, he befriended his co. star Chris Owen, and they would go onto starring in multiple projects together. He continued to attend school in Kenosha as he went on to appear in movies such as the Lyman Dayton-directed Last Resort[4] in 1996 and The Lovemaster in 1997.[5] He graduated from Reuther Central High School in 1997 with a drama scholarship[6] that would later be revoked after losing a main role in The Mighty.[7]

His next roles would be few and far-between often putting him in the position of the fat friend in films such as 2004's Who's Your Daddy and 2006's Bachelor Party Vegas. After more roles in various comedy films that ended up being direct-to-video, Talbert was discouraged and took a break from acting after 2008's The Charlie Talbert Show, aired exclusively on Verizon Phones, to grow up and settle down. In 2013, Talbert dipped his toes back into the entertainment industry by becoming a stand-up comedian often performing at various venues in southern California.[8] He returned to acting full-time in 2015 after a move to New Orleans, Louisiana being cast in supporting roles in films such as The Big Short and I Saw The Light.

In 2019, Talbert portrayed Ignatius J. Reilly in a production of A Confederacy of Dunces.[9]

A few of his recent credits include 2020's Max Reload and the Nether Blasters[10], the 2023 HBO miniseries Love & Death, and the upcoming horror film Shelby Oaks.[11]
