Charston Rock Lighthouse is an active lighthouse in the Severn Estuary, located off the coast near Portskewett, Monmouthshire, Wales. The lighthouse marks Charston Rock, a hazardous rocky outcrop situated between the Severn Bridge and the Prince of Wales Bridge in the upper estuary.[1]
The lighthouse is sometimes informally referred to as Black Rock Lighthouse, after the nearby Black Rock area on the Welsh shore of the estuary.
The lighthouse was built in 1869 and is maintained by the Gloucester Harbour Trustees.[2]
Description

The structure is a round white-painted tower with a lantern and gallery platform. According to lighthouse records, the tower is approximately 7 metres (23 ft) high.[1]
The lighthouse stands on a small rock island which is exposed at low tide but surrounded by water during high tide. The surrounding waters of the Severn Estuary are known for their strong currents and extreme tidal range.

History
The lighthouse was established in 1886 on an existing stone tower dating from 1869, originally owned by the Great Western Railway Company.[3]
The original oil-burning light operated in conjunction with Redcliffe Light to provide a leading line through the Shoots channel of the Severn Estuary. The lighthouse was converted to acetylene gas operation in 1926, and the light characteristic was later altered. In 1966, the light became battery operated using a redundant lens from Redcliffe. The lantern housing and lens were removed in 1980 and replaced with a solar-powered light system. In 2005, a new LED lantern was installed.[3]
Location

Charston Rock Lighthouse lies close to the route of the Severn Bridge and the England–Wales boundary within the Severn Estuary. It is visible from the shoreline near Black Rock, close to Portskewett.[2]
