Chase Chen (Chinese 陈川) is a Chinese born artist living in Los Angeles CA, USA. He is known for his evoking paintings and drawings of people and landscapes.[1][2]
Early life and education[edit]
Chase Chen was born on March 10, 1959, in Shanghai China, into a Doctor’s family. His father Chen Xing Rong (Chinese 陈星荣) is a Radiologist and mother Zhang An Zhang (Chinese 张安中) is a Neuropharmacologist. Sister Joan Chen (Chinese 陈冲) is an actress.[3][4]
Carrer[edit]
Chase Chen is a classically trained painter. He started drawing at an early age. At age 12, Chase studied drawing under Meng Guang (Chinese 孟光) and Chen Yi Fei (Chinese 陈逸飞). In 1981 he graduated from Shanghai Art Academy in Fine Arts. From 1981 to 1985 Chase Chen taught figurative art in Jiao Tong University (Chinese 交通大学) in Shanghai. In 1985 Chase moved to California. Since then he lives and works in Los Angeles. Chase grew up during China’s Cultural Revolution. He was one of the artists who defied propaganda painting. Instead, he chose a more humanistic natural settle. This trend started to emerge in the early 80s, and his work was quickly recognized and well-received worldwide. His paintings and drawings are mostly of his friends and family. He is keen to the elusive small magic that surrounds daily life.[5][6][7]
From 1991 to 1994 Chase Chen’s works appeared in every Christie’s auction in Hong Kong. From 1985 to 1995 Chase worked with numerous galleries in the U.S. His work was featured in Art Miami, Art New York, and Art Los Angeles, also Art Asia in Hong Kong. From 1995 to 2010 Chase was represented by Zephyr Cove publishing and showed his work mainly in Japan. In 2010 his work was commissioned by the City of San Francisco for the World Expo in Shanghai. The 35 foot tall “Sprout “ became the permanent feature of the Shanghai landscape.[8][9][10]
