Cheaper Than Therapy is a comedy club located in the Union Square neighborhood of San Francisco, CA.

History
Comedians Scott Simpson, Eloisa Bravo, and Jon Allen founded Cheaper Than Therapy as a comedy night at The Purple Onion in 2013,[1][2] but quickly moved to Shelton Theater where the show has been since late 2013.[3] In the San Francisco Chronicle's Datebook, Jon Allen cleared up a common misconception: “The audience always thought our name was a play on it being cheaper than therapy for them, but no, it was cheaper for me and other comedians.”[4][5] Due to the show's continued success, Cheaper Than Therapy has expanded steadily to presenting seven shows per week,[6] which have run consistently, other than during the Coronavirus pandemic when the show temporarily closed to maintain public safety.[7]
Venue
Cheaper Than Therapy celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2018 by expanding hosting one 10 p.m. show each on Fridays and Saturdays to an additional 8 p.m. show[8]. Today, it has performances in Shelton Theater’s main theater every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m. The box office and bars open an hour before showtime to audience members aged 18 and older. The club has no drink minimum. After the shows, comedians mingle with the crowd. Line-ups are unannounced, and tickets are sold at a flat rate no matter who performs. Shows also end before the BART and Muni stop running so that audience members can get home on public transportation.[9] Shelton Theater is located at 533 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94102.
Audience Reception
Cheaper Than Therapy is a staple of San Francisco comedy. California.com named Cheaper Than Therapy one of California’s best comedy clubs.[10] Secret San Francisco listed Cheaper Than Therapy as one of the most popular places to see stand-up in San Francisco.[11] Entrepreneur named Cheaper Than Therapy one of America’s favorite Mom & Pop shops,[12] as well as number 3 on its list of America’s 15 Favorite Local Entertainment Experiences.[13]
