Chedly Zouiten (11 November 1901 in Monastir – 1 August 1963)[1] is a prominent figure in the history of Espérance Sportive de Tunis (EST) and Tunisian football in general.

Career

The first Tunisian dentist, a profession he practiced privately in his office in Tunis, Zouiten joined Espérance Sportive de Tunis in 1922 as a player, and later served as president for over forty years.[2]

Zouiten gave Espérance Sportive de Tunis its current colors (Yellow and Red) in 1924[3]. Under his leadership, spanning more than three decades, EST had to face considerable challenges, even coming close to abandonment, until the club finally rose to the honorary division of the Tunisian League in 1936.[3]

At the age of 23, he sought a first and second term as president in 1930. [2]

He held this position continuously until his death. On 1 August 1963, he was killed in a road accident on the GP1 near Bir Bouregba, while returning from Monastir.[4]

Tributes

Today, a stadium in Tunis bears his name.[5]
