Chelsea Geils, known professionally as Chelsea Jyles, is a South African born Australian pop singer-songwriter.[1]
Early life[edit]
Chelsea was born Chelsea Bianca Geils in Durban, South Africa.[2] At the age of 5, her family moved to the Isle of Man in the UK for one year, before her father was transferred again to Mauritius. They lived there for almost 4 years before the family immigrated to Brisbane, Australia when Chelsea was 9. She began playing guitar at 15 when her mother encouraged her to follow her love for music. Chelsea fell in love with the instrument and started writing songs after learning only 3 chords in her first lesson. After only a couple of weeks, Chelsea stopped going to lessons and began to teach herself. Before too long, she had taught herself how to play every chord on guitar, plus piano and ukulele.
Music career[edit]
Chelsea self–released two EPs I'm A Runaway (2012) and I Don't Wanna Party (2013).[3] Her released singles include "Infinity", "Awkward" and "Love 101". The music video for "Love 101" was compiled of videos sent in by fans to signify the message of spreading love through everyone taking "Love 101".[4]
In early 2015, Chelsea officially changed her stage name to Chelsea Jyles after people continually mispronounced her last name when spelt G-e-i-l-s.
Throughout 2015, Chelsea posted her "The Chelsea Chapters" videos, which she uploaded to both YouTube and Facebook.[5] The videos included acoustic performances and behind the scenes looks at her songs and life.[6]
In 2016, after spending years teaching herself how to produce, Chelsea began to produce, mix and master songs for herself. She has stated that even though the quality of the recordings aren't up to industry standard, she would rather put out music that is exactly what she wants it to be. She wrote and produced over 30 songs in 2016 before releasing "Big City" in April 2016 folled by "Gotcha". Her new sound captures the upbeat, fun elements of pop, including synths, with the undertones of rock in the use of guitars and real drums samples.
Chelsea moved to Los Angeles in mid-2016.
Personal life[edit]
Chelsea has one older sister, Brittany. Chelsea's mother, Arlene, is a teacher and her father, David, is in foreign exchange. Chelsea is very close with her family and credits them for her chasing her dreams.
