Chen Arieli (Hebrew: חן אריאלי) is a social activist, feminist, and politician who has been active in the LGBTQIA+ rights and Women's rights movement in Israel. Arieli currently serves as the Deputy Mayor of the Tel Aviv-Yafo and serves as Co-Chair of The Aguda – Israel's LGBT Task Force.[1] Arieli is the first open Lesbian to hold the Deputy Mayor position.[2][3]

Early life

Chen Arieli was born on July 9, 1976, and raised in Haifa to Dan and Leah, a sister to Orly Zarfati and Ran Arieli.[4] She studied at the School of Arts high school with a graphic arts major. In her youth, she volunteered at absorption centres with new immigrants from Ethiopia and was a member of the Scouts and HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed youth movement. In the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), she served in the Home Front Command as a population instructor during emergency situations.

Activism

LGBTQ rights

Prior to becoming Deputy Mayor, Arieli was most well known for her LGBTQ+ activism as Chair of The Aguda – Israel's LGBT Task Force.[5]

Arieli helped produce TLVFest, an annual film festival held in Tel Aviv, focusing on LGBT themed film from around the world.[6][7][8] Arieli also helped produce Lethal Lesbian, Israel's only lesbian film festival.[9]

In 2013, Arieli was a partner in the “Gay Literature” project which added shelves of LGBT literature to libraries in the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality.[10]

Arieli served as Chair of The Aguda – Israel's LGBT Task Force[5] for two terms between 2015 and 2019.[11] Arieli served as Joint Chair of the Task Force from 2015 to 2016 together with Omri Calman.[12][13] In June 2016, Arieli and Calman threatened to cancel the annual Tel Aviv Pride Parade over inequity in fiscal support for LGBT causes from the Israeli Government.[14] As a result, the Israeli Government increased the budget for LGBTQ community organizations to a record 10 million NIS.[15][16]

In July 2017, Arieli led a protest against discrimination of same-sex couples in the adoption process opposite the Tel Aviv Government Complex with tens of thousands of participants.[17]

In July 2018, Arieli led street protests against Israel's anti-gay surrogacy laws, among other issues.[18][19][20] The culmination was a protest rally in Rabin Square with the participation of over 100,000 people.[21][22]

In October 2018, Arieli initiated the "Pride Platform," a project training members of the LGBT community to run in local elections and encouraging Israeli political parties to increase LGBT representation.[21]

Women's rights

Arieli is one of the founders of the women’s movement that began in December 2018 uniting Jewish and Arab women as a result of increased violence against women in Israel.[23] She is also one of the founders of the Committee for the Advancement of Women in the Community at the Gay Urban Center.[24]

Arieli is a member of the Public Council of the Itach-Maaki Women Lawyers for Social Justice[25] and a member of the Executive Committee of Matzmichim - The Israeli Violence Reduction Organization.[26] She represents the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality on the Board of Directors of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and of “Ahuzat Hahof," a municipal company owned by the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality, which has been operating parking lots throughout Tel Aviv-Jaffa.[27]

Arieli worked as a business consultant for women’s business social business and has given lectures all over Israel on subjects of body imagery and fat phobia.[28]

Arieli was voted as one of the most influential women in the civilian arena at present, and was voted as one of the most outstanding social activists in Israel in the Yediot Aharonot newspaper list for 2017 and 2018 and the Globes list for 2018[29]

Political work

Arieli is the first openly Gay Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo, responsible for the Social services portfolio. Among her priorities in this role is addressing LGBTQ issues, especially those facing transgender people, and continuing to address the issues that brought the 2018 strike.[30][31]

During the 19th Knesset, 2013- 2015, Arieli served as a Spokesperson and Political Advisor to Merav Michaeli of the Labor Party, in the liberal democratic wing. Michaeli is widely considered a leading feminist public figure in Israel.[32][33]

Arieli is the Co-Founder and CEO of DRUGI, a new social enterprise building cooperation within Israeli civil society – working through networking and a digital platform to encourage people and organizations in the civil society in Israel to work together for the greater good.[34][33]

Arieli was a 2019-2020 Fellow at The Alliance, an action-based elite network for up and coming progressive political leaders who are focused on promoting civic equality.[35]

Arieli worked as a business consultant for women at risk in the Shanti House in Tel Aviv.

Personal life

Arieli is in a relationship with Halit Levy, a documentary filmmaker. The two live in Jaffa.[36][37][38]
