Chen Ziqiang (Chinese: 陈自强, born 1977) is a Chinese martial artist and the 20th-generation inheritor of Chen-style tai chi (Taijiquan). He serves as the **head coach of the Chenjiagou Taijiquan School** in Henan, China, and is widely recognized for his role in promoting traditional Taijiquan internationally.[1][2]
Early life
Chen Ziqiang was born in Chenjiagou, the birthplace of Taijiquan, in 1977.[2] He is the eldest son of Chen Xiaoxing and the nephew of Chen Xiaowang, both prominent figures of the 19th generation of the Chen family. From a young age, he was trained under their guidance in traditional Chen-style Taijiquan.[1]
Career
Between 1996 and 2002, Chen Ziqiang won several national and international tuishou (push hands) competitions.[1] He later appeared in Chinese television programs promoting the practice of Taijiquan and martial ethics.[1] As the head coach of the Chenjiagou Taijiquan School, he supervises training programs for students from around the world and frequently conducts international workshops in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.[3][4]
Teaching and style
Chen emphasizes the preservation of traditional Chen-family training methods, including:
- Zhàn Zhuāng (standing post meditation)
- Chán Sī Gōng (silk-reeling exercises)
- Tuīshǒu (push hands)
- Classical routines such as Laojia Yilu, Xinjia Yilu and Erlu (Pao Chui)[2]
His teaching integrates traditional Chinese martial principles with a focus on biomechanics and body awareness. He is known for combining discipline and accessibility in his international seminars.[1]
Publications
Chen Ziqiang is the editor-in-chief of the series Chinese Folk Wushu Classic Series (中国民间武术经典丛书), published by Haiyan Publishers and Henan Audio-Visual Publishing House. The collection reportedly consists of sixteen volumes on traditional Chen-style routines and weapon forms, including:
- Chen-style Taiji Double Broadsword (陈氏太极双锏)
- Chen-style Taiji Double Sword (陈氏太极双剑)
- Chen-style Taiji Single Broadsword (陈氏太极单刀)
- Chen-style Taiji Staff (陈氏太极棍)[5]
Recognition
Chen Ziqiang is frequently invited to teach at international seminars and training camps. His efforts have contributed to the global expansion of Chen-style Taijiquan, particularly in Europe, North and South America.[1][2] He is regarded as one of the leading contemporary representatives of the Chen lineage, balancing traditional martial training with modern pedagogy.
