Chengyu Cai (January 17, 1998 – ) is a young Chinese operatic tenor. He is currently studying vocal performance and opera at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2018, he participated in Hunan TV’s singing competition Super Vocal, where he first gained attention and recognition throughout China for singing nine high-quality High Cs within a minute. [1][2]
Early Life
Chengyu Cai grew up in Suzhou, Anhui Province, and went to Sucheng No. 1 High School. [3] In his last music class in high school, he performed "Heroes' Song" (好汉歌) at classmates’ invitation. After the performance, impressed by the talent Chengyu showed, his music teacher encouraged him to pursue music as a career in the future. [1][4] One year later, Chengyu was successfully accepted to Shanghai Conservatory of Music with the 4th best grades nationwide. [3]
Singing Career
In 2018, Chengyu participated in Hunan TV’s singing competition Super Vocal. He made his debut by performing "Ah! mes amis." (多么快乐的一天), one of the well-known songs from the opera "La fille du régiment" (军中女郎). Chengyu smoothly sang a string of nine high C’s in this joyous aria “Ah! mes amis." and won the nickname of "Cai High C." Later in the competition, he has been continuously improving and finally made it to the top 6 leading singers in Super Vocal for the year of 2018. [1][2][5]
In February 2019, he was invited to participate in Hunan TV’s singing competition Singer (previously titled I Am a Singer) together with other finalists from Super Vocal (Hongchuan Ju, Yunlong Zheng, and A Yunga). On April 12, 2019, the Super Vocal Finalist team won third place in the Grand Final. [6]
