Chess in Honduras
Chess games in Honduras date back to colonial times with the introduction of the game that was played by the Spanish conquerors.
The first national chess league was the Liga Sampedrana de Ajedrez founded in 1973, long before the National Chess Federation of Honduras was founded in 1993. Among the outstanding chess players of Honduras is Ricardo Urbina, who in 2004 was the first Honduran chess player to reach the category of International Master in the country.
National chess leagues
In 1973 the Sampedrana Chess League was founded and in 1975 the Central Chess League of Tegucigalpa, later the: Copaneca League, Olanchana League, Porteña League, Central League and Sampedrana League were founded.
National Chess Federation
The National Chess Federation of Honduras was founded on June 26, 1993 in Tegucigalpa and is affiliated to the International Chess Federation, it is located in the “José Simón Azcona Hoyo sports complex in Tegucigalpa. [ 1 ]. Since 2016 the presidency of the National Chess Federation of Honduras has been held by Juan Carlos Hernández (broken link available in Internet Archive; see history and latest version). Under his mandate, the First Absolute Central American and Caribbean Championship 2017 was held in the city of La Ceiba and also the second edition of the same tournament this time in the city of San Pedro Sula. For the year 2019, the Central American Team Championship will be organized in the male and female branch and for October 2019 the Central American and Caribbean Youth Festival will be held for the first time in the country's history, which promises to be the largest Chess Tournament in the history of the country.
National Chess Players
Some prominent national chess players are:
- José Guillen, winner of third place in a world championship for under 16s,
- Jorge Zamora, who obtained first place in a world under 10 years,
- Jeremías Samayoa, who was the first FIDE Master in 1995,
- Ricardo Urbina, who in 2004 was the first International Master (and the only one to date) from Honduras.
Also noteworthy are FIDE Master Tomas Lozano, who has the highest ELO of the Honduran Chess Federation with a FIDE ELO of 2260. [ 2 ] And FIDE Master José Guillén. [ 3 ]
Javier Medina playing in Calviá in 2004 was the first Honduran to beat a Grand Master in an Olympiad. [ 4 ]
Some candidates for FIDE Master are: Javier Medina Colindres, [ 6 ] Andrés Ustariz and Yelso Bobadilla. [ 5 ]
Prominent female chess players include:
- Leslie Carolina Torres Hernández is the only national woman with the title of FIDE Master. [ 5 ]
- Rita Michelle Rivera Varela, who obtained 1st place as Best Female Chess player in the 2010 ABSH (Association of Bilingual Schools of Honduras) Chess Tournament. That same year, she placed 6th overall, being the only female in the top 10. Rivera also obtained the title of Best Checkmate in the 2011 ABSH Chess Tournament.
Central American Championship
The Central American championship took place on October 11-15, 2013 in Tegucigalpa. [ 7 ]
International ranking
Honduras is ranked 107 internationally, with an average ELO of 2177, it does not have any Chess Grandmaster, it has only one International Master and also 18 players with titles. [ 8 ]
