Chess on Stamps Study Unit

The Chess on Stamps Study Unit (COSSU) is an international philatelic organization devoted to the collection and study of postage stamps and other postal material related to the game of chess. It is a study unit of the American Topical Association (ATA) and an affiliate of the American Philatelic Society (APS).

History

The unit was established in 1979 to provide a forum for thematic or "topical" philatelic collectors specializing in chess. At the time of its founding, the "Chess on Stamps" topic was growing in popularity following the high-profile 1972 World Chess Championship, won by American Bobby Fischer. Since its inception, COSSU has served as an international body for chess philately, documenting the issuance of thousands of chess-themed stamps from over 140 countries. The study unit has maintained a continuous publication record of its quarterly journal, and hosts auctions for its members. The unit operates as a not-for-profit organization.

Activities and Publications

The unit supports the research, cataloging, and collecting of stamps, covers, postal stationery, cancellations, and related material featuring chess, including those from unrecognized countries and local posts. Activities include the circulation of information to members, such as specialized checklists and detailed studies, a Sales Service, and periodic auctions.

The organization publishes a quarterly journal, Chesstamp Review (it recently released its 200th issue), which contains illustrated articles, contributions from members, new-issue information, auctions, and classified advertisements. Relationships to Other Philatelic Organizations

As an ATA study unit, COSSU operates within a network of topical groups. While independent in its internal administration, the unit follows ATA guidelines and benefits from the ATA's promotional activities, exhibition presence, and educational programs, including joint initiatives developed in partnership with organizations such as the American Philatelic Society.
