City Harvest Church Criminal Breach of Trust Case

Conviction
Chew Eng Han was one of those involved in the City Harvest Church Criminal Breach of Trust Case. In October 2015, he was found guilty of 6 counts of criminal breach of trust and 4 counts of falsifying church accounts under section 409 of the Penal Code. Chew was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment. The prosecutor noted that his defense was incoherent and lacked credibility.
Appeal
After the sentence in October 2015, Chew and 5 other church leaders filed an appeal against their convictions. Their appeals were heard by a three-judge panel over five days in September 2016. During his appeal, Chew said the sentencing judge had "gravely erred" in his ruling, and used a flawed definition of misappropriation. He also added he had been "brainwashed" into supporting the Crossover Project as Kong Hee regularly played up Sun Ho's music success. As a result, Chew's sentence was reduced from 6 years of imprisonment to 3 years and 4 months of imprisonment.
Filing a new police report
In July 2016, Chew filed a new police report against 8 members of the church (including Kong Hee and Sun Ho). Chew alleged that this was for "fraudulent misrepresentation of vital facts about the church which induced me and other members to give our donations, and also for use of funds for purposes other than what was represented to the members of the church."
Attempt to flee Singapore
Chew requested to defer the serving of his sentence after Chinese New Year. He was allowed to start serving his sentence on February 22, after the Chinese New Year holiday. During this period, Chew attempted to escape Singapore by hiring someone to sneak him out by sea.
On February 20, 2018, Chew contacted Khoo Kea Leng to request finding someone who could help him leave Singapore illegally.
On February 21, a day before Chew Eng Han was due to start his sentence, the boat driver, Tan Poh Teck assisted Chew Eng Han's intention to flee Singapore illegally. They planned to travel from Pulau Ubin island to Malaysia using the motorized sampan. When the boat reached 2.4 km distance away from Pulau Ubin jetty at 8.47am, Tan Poh Teck was driving the vessel towards the four fish farms which were in Singapore waters near north-east Pulau Ubin in an attempt to switch the boat at the fish farms, the Singapore Police Coast Guards vessels intercepted the motorized sampan. When the Coast Guards intercepted, Chew gave excuses by claiming that they were having a fishing trip. Chew Eng Han and Tan Poh Teck were immediately arrested at sea. He was later released on bail on February 23, 2018.
Increased sentence
Chew Eng Han was sentenced to an additional jail term of 13 months on January 29 for attempting to leave the country using unlawful ways and attempting to defeat justice. He will serve the additional 13 months of imprisonment after the end of his first sentence.
