Chi Sigma Xi (ΧΣΞ) is a multicultural, social, philanthropic, and academic sorority founded at the University of Toronto Scarborough in Scarborough, Ontario.

Chi Sigma Xi strives to eliminate gender, cultural, ethnic, and social inequality in the community. With several of the sorority's members being international students, ΧΣΞ is culturally diverse and globally connected.

Purpose[edit]

Chi Sigma Xi aims to offer its members a community of women to support them through and beyond their university experience. Chi Sigma Xi aims to encourage its members to grow personally, academically, socially and professionally through the organization's events and activities. Members of the organization are offered leadership experience and volunteer opportunities.[1]

Crest and symbols[edit]

The official colours are: black, white and purple. Their symbols including: purple roses, the balanced scale, the torch and their mascot (the wolf), are incorporated on their crest.[2]

History[edit]

Chi Sigma Xi was founded by its seven founding mothers on April 1, 2010, as the first and only sorority at the University of Toronto (UTSC).

As of 2016 Chi Sigma Xi has expressed that it is "trans inclusive" and welcomes those self-identifying as a woman.[3]

Values[edit]

"The sisters of Chi Sigma Xi are committed to improving their community through volunteer work, fundraising events, scholastic achievement, and sisterly support given to each and all of Chi Sigma Xi members."[1] Chi Sigma Xi works to challenge "Greek Life" stereotypes and be a positive force in their community.[4] The sorority believes in equality and maintains that its members are equal by refraining from use of a hierarchal system.[5] The sorority also enforces a strict no hazing policy and does not tolerate any hazing of prospective members or between members.[6] Chi Sigma Xi does not require any sorority dues or membership fees to be a member.Chi Sigma Xi offers academic support to its members including study sessions and a textbook library.[6]

The sorority values multiculturalism, philanthropy, academia and social activity and works to build strong independent women.

Philanthropic efforts[edit]

Chi Sigma Xi chooses to not commit to a single organization but help out in both their campus community as well as the Toronto community through various efforts including fundraising, awareness campaigns and volunteering. Their on campus philanthropy includes campaigns such as "exam-o-grams" and "midterm motivation" giving out care packages and snacks to students on campus. Some of the organizations they have worked with include (but are not limited to):[2]
