CSU Chico SOTA Productions
The School Of The Arts (SOTA) Productions is the student-run artist development, production, and marketing arm of the Chico State School of the Arts. SOTA Productions is committed to providing quality music, events, and entertainment to the students, patrons, and artists of Chico. Since 2012, SOTA has brought the community events like "Chico Unplugged", "Keep Chico Creative", and "Chico Plugged In" which are all promoted, planned, and executed by students. Along with that, they've brought industry professionals and musicians such as Tokimonsta, Sylvia Massy, East Bay Ray Archived 2018-08-28 at the Wayback Machine, Kevin Lyman, and many others since its inception. SOTA’s goals are to support the City of Chico to become a hub for talent by providing students with the opportunities to identify, develop, and support local and regional musicians; provide performance, recording, and educational opportunities for artists; provide students with opportunities to produce, create, and promote content and special events. With different associations like Grammy U, and NAMM, students are given the essential tools needed in order to truly experience how the music industry works.
Chico Unplugged
SOTA Productions puts on a bi-annual competition at Madison Bear Garden, previously held at Woodstock's Pizza, to give local acoustic artists the chance to win a free recording at CSU Chico. This involves the audio and audiovisual recording of the winners on campus and culminates in a record release party at the end of each semester, all promoted on social media by SOTA's PR team. The competition as a whole takes place during the first few months of each semester; late September for the Fall semester, and early February for the spring semester. Contestants can establish interest with SOTA beforehand or sign up the day of whichever of the 2 days they decide to participate in.
Chico Plugged In
Chico Plugged In is a relatively new aspect of the event planning for SOTA Production, yet just with its first show, it established a correlating theme. That being the "Unplugged" being acoustic, while "Plugged In" was centered around the electronic scene. The first event was held at 1078 Gallery in Chico, CA in November of 2016, featuring local acts such as Subfer, Yandi, Imullinati, and many more local acts. The show sold out and was a huge success not only for SOTA Productions and all of the artists but as an initiative to bring the community together to support its own local electronic artists.
Keep Chico Creative
Since 2014, Keep Chico Creative has been at the forefront, along with Chico Unplugged, at giving exposure to local artists and promoting a community of musicians within Chico. It has featured artists such as Klez, Mawd, Russel Turner Ward, Sway (now Mad Tantra), along with many others. This truly facilitates the ongoing vision of a collaborative music community by holding it on the night of Thursday Night Markets in Chico, along with obtaining sponsorships and promotion from a long list of different organizations in Chico. Those being Chico News & Review (CN&R), KCSC Radio, Chico State School of the Arts (SOA), Downtown Chico Business Association (DOBA), and Instructionally Related Activities (IRA).
