The Chief Justice of Karnataka is the head of the High Court of Karnataka, the highest judicial authority in the state of Karnataka, India. The position is established under Article 214 of the Constitution of India and is responsible for the administration of justice within the state's jurisdiction.[1]
History
The origins of the office can be traced to the role of Chief Judge, established in 1881. This was re-designated as the Chief Justice of the Chief Court of Mysore in 1884, when the Court was renamed as the Chief Court of Mysore under Chief Court Regulation (1) of 1884, which was passed under Mysore Act of 1884 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III on 28 May 1884.[2][3][4][5]
The High Court of Karnataka was initially established as the High Court of Mysore on November 18, 1884, by the British colonial administration, serving as the highest judicial authority in the princely state of Mysore.[6][7] After India's independence and the reorganization of states, the court was renamed as the High Court of Karnataka following the formation of Karnataka state.
Constitutional position and powers
The Chief Justice of Karnataka is appointed by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of Karnataka, as per Article 217 of the Constitution of India.[8]
The Chief Justice serves as the administrative head of the Karnataka High Court and all subordinate courts in the state, exercising superintendence over all courts and tribunals within Karnataka, except those under military jurisdiction.[9] The office is responsible for case allocation to various benches and judges within the High Court, and frames procedural rules for courts within the state's jurisdiction.[10]
Current office holder
Justice Vibhu Bakhru became Karnataka's Chief Justice on June 18, 2025.[11][12][13]
Court strength and administration
The Karnataka High Court has a sanctioned maximum strength of 62 judges. As of September 2025, the court operates with its allocated judicial strength to ensure efficient case disposal across various benches.[14][15]
Jurisdiction
The court serves as the highest Court of Appeal, Reference and Revision in the territories of Karnataka and has powers of superintendence and control over all other Courts in the State. The Chief Justice's jurisdiction extends throughout Karnataka state, covering both civil and criminal matters at the appellate level.
Historical significance
The Karnataka High Court (formerly Bangalore High Court) established in Bengaluru in 1884 is among the five oldest high courts in India, alongside the Calcutta High Court (est. 1862), Bombay High Court (est. 1862), Madras High Court (est. 1862), and Allahabad High Court (est. 1866).[16]
